So I'm building a new gaming rig, but I can't decide between the AMD 8320 processor or the i5 4460. I've read extensive reviews and debates but I still cannot decide. Suggestions would be much appreciated!

Solution
At stock frequencies you'll be able to play games at better FPS and have an overall better performance with the i5-4460.

Only get the FX-8320 if you will overclock the heck out of it with a proper cooler and mobo. Otherwise, the i5-4460 is faster and runs significantly cooler than the FX-8320.

I don't think I'll be over clocking, not in the near future anyway. Also, what kind of fps would I expect from an i5 4460 using a fx 750ti while playing rpg's e.g. Skyrim, Fallout 4, oblivion etc and would I be able to use medium - high settings on games such as GTA V, Witcher 3 etc? Sorry for the questions, I'm just new and curious:)

I actually answered this same point in another post.

The difference between the 4460 and 8320 at stock is only 2-3 FPS. Literally, single digits.

The 8320 runs cooler than the i5 by a large margin. Max temp for the 8320 is in the 55c range, whereas the i5 will easily hit 70c under load.
The i5 will use a bit less power, but the cost savings in the 8320 makes it about equal over a 3 year period.

HOWEVER...

The FX series will be replaced by newer AMD Zen cores. So unless you plan to wait or upgrade again in a year or two, it may be better for you to go with a Skylake build right now instead.

If you're on a strict budget I'd personally go for an i3 or fx6300 paired with a gtx 950/960/r9 380.

A 750ti is seriously going to let the side down.
It was never that good a card in the first place , its only saving grace IMO was its power efficiency.

I'm on a £400 budget, I can stretch higher but I'd prefer to stuck around that price.

Using the above suggestions, I'm currently looking at the i5 4460, H97 plus, 1600mhz 2x8gb ram, Seagate 1tb hard drive and a 750ti graphics card.

I would honestly make concessions by dropping the ram to 8gb & maybe dropping to a h97 anniversary board

youve then got 40-50 quid extra for a gpu & the 750ti just doesnt cut it now for a gaming build mate.

Okay that looks good, I think I'll drop the 750ti and look in to your suggestions. Really appreciate your help as I'm a complete noob to building gaming rigs :cheese: If I were to increase my budget though, is there any better motherboards to choose from? Or is the one you've suggested enough suitable enough?

nah mate , thousands of members on here with the asrock anniversary & pro 4 boards.

You'll rarely see a problem.
Absolutely fine board for a 85w i5 , you may be referring to stuff you've heard about their amd boards which is all true - they use the same vrm sets on a lot of their amd boards which while fine for a sub 100w Intel chip are nowhere near good enough for 125w+ fx chips.

Its a personal crusade of mine to put people off buying an asrock 970 series amd board for their builds but for Intel they're thoroughly decent.

No it isn't. If got a 4460 (not a K series so stick with stock cooler), with a Gigabyte £60 motherboard, that would be £133+£60, so basically £200. Get a corsair CX PSU, for £35, so £235. Plus a case for £30, so £255. 8GB HyperFury RAM, for £30, and a 1 TB WD Hard Drive for £35, totalling altogether at £330. Windows 7 can be easilly picked up for £30 now, so £360. I'm sure going a little over budget to get a decent Graphics card wouldn't hurt, but the inter grated graphics would hold up fine in the meanwhile.
