I recently built a new PC with an AMD FX-8350 CPU. More recently, I purchased an Intel i5-4570 for $75 due to the insane deal presented to me. I'm more than aware of the neverending fanboy arguments regarding this specific subject, but I'm still unsure if I made the right choice going with the AMD build. I'm just single-monitor, 1080 gaming (mostly RPGs, some FPS, rarely online w/ either genre), but I do like to maximize my settings and fps within reason, although I don't have any issues with my current setup (single GTX 780 SC ACX). I love my GPU, so Mantle isn't of any interest to me. If I had any interest in owning an AMD GPU, I probably wouldn't be having this problem.
Now, money isn't as much of an issue as hassle/time consumption, so my specific question is: Would it be worth YOUR TIME to switch from an FX-8350 to an i5-4570 (or possibly a 4670(k) if I can sell the one I have and find one on the cheap)? I can sell my current CPU/MB for ~$250, so that would go toward a new MB and possibly the 4670 upgrade, but it's such a pain to uninstall/reinstall the hardware then reload Windows and set all my files back up, especially when I just went through all of this about a month ago. I'd like to upgrade again in around 2 years, but I'm pretty sure the FX line is dead, so my secondary question is: Is there significant room for growth after the 4570/4670 for that particular socket type? Enough to merit abandoning the FX-8350 after one month of use? I've got my FX-8350 overclocked to 4.8GHz (20.5 multi / 234 HT ref clock) stable for hours on Prime95 w/ temps under 60 C, but does that produce better per-core performance than the stock i5?
Here's my setup, if that helps your decision at all.
MB: M5A99FX Pro r2.0
CPU: AMD FX-8350 (OC'ed to 4.8GHz)
GPU: EVGA GTX 780 SC ACX
RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR3 8GB (2 x 4GB) @ 1866MHz
PSU: Rosewill Capstone M-series (gold rated) 650W
CPU Cooler: Corsair h100i
