FX 8350 viable in modded Minecraft?

My brother is currently using a family computer that has an i3 6100. He would like a PC of his own, and there is a craigslist posting in my area that has an FX 8350 and R9 290X for $300. Obviously the GPU is a massive upgrade over integrated graphics, but he mostly plays Minecraft, specifically this modpack:

Even though Piledriver has horrible IPC, would this PC be an upgrade SPECIFICALLY for modded Minecraft? Thanks.

Honestly, for Minecraft, the i3 is going to be faster than an FX 8350. Minecraft won't really use all the extra cores.

I would rather see you save a touch more and get a newer setup with a Ryzen CPU instead. A 2600 + decent RAM + a RX 570 or 580
