FX or not to FX?

I currently have a Fx6300 clocked at 4.5ghz on a asus m5a97 r2.0 board. Question is, is there anywhere for me to go for more performance with FX CPUs? would I gain any performance with a 8 core FX? I mainly use my rig for games, multi media and light general computer task. gaming is the only area i seek more cpu power. I plan to upgrade from my 270x to something like a gtx970. Don't want to buy a intel motherboard so where can i go up from my 4.5ghz fx6300? Will any of the 8 core fx chips give me better performance than my 6300?

There isn't much of a speed difference between the FX-6300 series and generally all FX-8000s series, but the FX-8000s can handle a lot more because they have two extra cores and more cache, but their cores can be a bit slower. FX-6300 is also a triple core with two threads, making it a 6 thread CPU which is why some quad cores beat it. You will get a much better performance boost through upgrading the GPU (Even though r9 270X is good), but the GTX 970 is about 2x the performance of that. It wouldn't hurt for extra cores, but it wouldn't make your games or anything like that any faster, especially considering your FX-6300 is majorly overclocked.

Since your not doing a lot of heavy work on your cpu. Just get a FX 8320. (or 8370 if you don't want to overclock)

FX 8000 is way better than the 6000 series.

Having an 8 core CPU wont make any difference for gaming... You should actually invest in an Intel build.

Even an older Intel chipset like z77 will out preform any AMD processors based on the AM3+ socket.

if your just going to game, watch movies, and browse internet then its perfect for that. I have the fx-6100 with a 750 Ti and it works wonders for me with a budget build

Going to a 8320/350 will gain you nothing for gaming apart from a big dent in your wallet.
If anything you'll struggle more to get the 8 cores to 4.5ghz without very good cooling & a big PSU.
Those 2 extra cores do nothing for games at this current time.
What makes you think you need more CPU power?? - apart from a handful of majorly single threaded games like arma/dayz the 6300 at that clock speed is entirely capable of running a 970.
By all means buy the 970 ,its a huge upgrade over your current 270x and you'll get a solid 60fps at max settings on just about any decently coded game out there.

The i5's are much more than just a gaming chip. They're a solid cpu all the way around and works very well with photoshop and illustrator even when rendering effects on 30-40mb raw images (around 4100x4200). The single core brute force pretty much scales throughout everything. Unless the 8xxx is faster than a 6xxx, it really won't provide much improvement. If the cores are the same speeds, throwing more cores at the problem won't solve it. More powerful cores is a better fix. Sometimes overclocking 4xxx and 6xxx is easier than the 8xxx/9xxx amd's. Less heat, less power draw.

There's a very slight difference between the two with a small edge to the 8350 but I don't think it's enough to justify buying a new cpu for. Same as with i5 3570k and 4690k. Or even an older 2500k. There isn't enough improvement going to the 4690k (even if it were priced the same as an 8350) to justify the upgrade. If you're going to invest in new parts looking for a noticeable performance gain, I'd suggest looking at intel personally. The lowest cost option that makes the most sense would be using a decent aftermarket cooler and overclocking your current 6300.

Thanks for all the suggestions. So basically I gather that from where I'm at with a 6300 already clocked at 4.5ghz, A 8 core fx wouldn't do much for me. At least for what I do with my rig.. Pretty much what I figured.

My motherboard is a 4x2 power phase so I shouldn't push my FX6300 any higher on this board than I already am I guess. I do have a H80i water cooler so temps are fine right now. Probably couldn't get a 8 core FX to 4.5ghz with my board anyway and then my performance per core would suffer compared to now. well don't want to buy intel board and for sure not taking it all apart to buy another am3+ board and cpu. Ill just get the GTX970 card and see how well she does. next build will be intel unless AMD has a new architecture out by the time i build again. thanks everyone.
