Upgrade the video card first, then take a look at the new Amd cpu's. Not sure if they are socket compatible, but it's worth checking out. If you don't have to buy a new motherboard in addition to your video card, that would save quite a bit of money.
Right now though, you could overclock that fx6300 for a decent performance gain. Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo for about 30 dollars would be a good investment for a cpu cooler regardless, even if you eventually upgrade to an i5 cpu.

Again AMD cores are not as powerful as 4th generation Intel ones so it depends on what type of games you'll be playing or tasks you'll be performing. For CPU intensive games (civilization, sim city, forged alliance supreme commander, battlefield 4, etc) you'll notice a large improvement if you have an i5 in your machine. If you live in the UK you can pick up a decent i5 for £150 at CCL Computing which is only £25 more than the FX-8350 - http://www.cclonline.com/
Currently the vast majority of games on the market require a dual core. This will become a quad core quite soon and then oct core in a few years time. Therefore the FX-8350 has a longer lifespan than the i5 range but its individual cores arent as powerful. So the questions are do you want to pay £25 extra? Do you mind slowdown in any cpu intensive games or applications you use? Are you okay with the trade off when it comes to longetivity over processing power?
