Hello everyone,

I bought this CPU about a month ago, I've been overclocking and messing with it, got it to 4,4 ~ 4,5 Ghz stable after a couple of tests on stock cooler.

However, my overclock is no longer working. I'm only able to boot into Windows without crashing running default BIOS settings at 3,2 Ghz

When I overclock my cpu to 3,3 ghz my Windows 7 crashes and gives me the following message

Windows Error Recovery - Windows was not able to start a recent hardware or software change might be the cause

- Launch startup repair ( recommended ) = Takes forever and doesn't do anything
- Start windows normally = crashes when the windows 7 logo is loading, back to bios and error screen

I've tried a newer bios, older bios, removed the CMOS battery for 10 min and put it back again, formatted Windows, and nothing worked, tried to OC using different voltages, didn't work.

It's still in warranty but this is the only cpu I have, is there anything else I could try before replacing it?

Thanks.

Full specs of PC please.

Sorry, I actually forgot to post it

CPU: Intel pentium G3258
MB: Msi h81m-E33
GPU: r7 260x sapphire 2gb
PSU: CoolerMaster Elite Power 400w ( 430w reais )
Memory: 4gb Kingston
Storage: 500gb HD samsung

Your motherboard is not designed for overclocking.
MSI H81M-E33 is a H81 chipset, chipsets that start with H can not overclock & this motherboard is a bit old.

Please, considering googling msi h81m-e33+g3258 , you will realize you are wrong saying it can't be overclocked

I've overclocked it to 4,5ghz myself for a full month like I wrote in this thread, It seems like you didn't even read it.

Thanks for trying to help anyways

It's a very cheap motherboard, it is not built to overclock. It is likely the motherboard is malfunctioning and there is no going back.

I realize it's a cheap motherboard, I was on a budget that why I bought a g3258 and that motheboard..

Is there any way to check whether the motherboard is malfunctioning or not? maybe it's the g3258 fault?

I'm not going to the store to replace it based on your post alone

cpu voltage too low? My Asus Z97I-Plus Intel Z97 auto overclock it, i think the voltage is almost at 1.5 there is many other things that it auto tune. No crash and work fine.
But that why i had spend more on quality MB so that i dont have to deal with many OC setings

My cpu is also the g3258 and its on liquid at 4.7

I followed that guide the day I bought the g3258, and it worked perfectly the first month until this issue happened 🙁

I'd just like to know what else I can try to do to be able to overclock it again, RMA usually takes a long time for things like this.

You are able to do this because of the solid Z97 chip set and motherboard you have.

Lol, I do plan to upgrade to an i5 / i7 in the near future that's one of the main reasons why I bought it

And I'm pretty happy with my g3258 being at the same level when not faster than an i3 for much less

By the way, just found this thread and it seems that it might be a windows update issue, it's not exactly the same issue I'm having, let's hope! 😀

I didn't mess with the voltage recently, like I said I had been running my g3258 at 4,4ghz stable for a month

Well, I tried flashing my bios once again today, it stopped at 49% and my computer restarted, after this restart I tried to boot up my computer and I noticed that both my cpu and gpu fans were running but the motherboard had no leds on and the computer wouldn't even show the bios settings when booting, even though it seemed fine, nothing showed up on the monitor

This is depressing, I'm trying to contact the MSI to active my warranty but no one replied yet, I believe there is nothing else I can do on my end.

Thanks.

The motherboard is probably toast then. Assuming it wasn't user error, only having one bios chip if the pc restarted halfway through a bios update and didn't complete then it probably bricked the bios. There could be other issues with it that were starting to show signs when the overclock stopped working properly. Some people have had luck but if you're like me (which it sounds like), cutting corners never ends well. Better to save a bit more from another paycheck or two and get a proper overclocking board. Typically if there's an issue between the cpu and mobo, it's usually the mobo. Not to say it's always the case but no one can say for sure speculating across the internet. Having it properly tested by a shop is the only way to be certain and that would probably cost more than the motherboard did to begin with.
