Thanks for the help/input on the question I had below about the 64MB vs 128MB versions of the Ti4200. I've got another one if you have the time to answer. :)

First off, I bought an Xtasy GeForce 3 Ti500 for Christmas. It was screaming and I saw a HUGE improvement over the Voodoo 5500 I'd had. All was good...

Until I started getting lockups and realized the fan was shot. I tried removing it, with little success, and rather than damage the card, contacted VisionTek and they told me to send it back for a replacement.

I've procrastinated and just run an external fan in my box, because I don't want to go BACK to the Voodoo 5 for even a few weeks, and ended up breaking down and buying the GeForce 4 Ti4200. I figured it would hold me over until I got the other back from VisionTek, then I'd put the "lesser" of the 2 in my 2nd computer (P2, 400).

Now, I guess I'm here to ask if the core changes from the GeForce 3 to 4 models makes that much of a difference. From everything I've found on both cards, their specs match up almost identically.

Unless I've read the information wrong, about the only differences I see between the G4 Ti4200 (64MB RAM) and the G3 Ti500 are the added core features of the GeForce 4 chipset itself.

So, would I be wise to put the Ti4200 in my main computer (PIII, 1Ghz) with the Ti500 in the old one, or would there really be a small amount of difference either way? It's basically a question of whether the "Top End" of the previous generation is significantly weaker than the "Bargain Performer" of this generation.

Also, are there any "not so well known" quirks of either card that would make one of them more suitable to be used in a slower CPU than the other?

Just getting sucked into this beautiful world of computers full force...I appreciate the feedback you guys can offer. I'm hoping to build my next computer from scratch.

Thanks!

You would revieve a performance boost, but don't expect a boost like the one recieved from upgrading from the Voodoo5. You'll recieve a bigger performance boost by upgrading the cpu and the video card than just upgrading the video card.

The GF3 should go in the P2 and the GF4 should go in the P3.

Um, the 4200 comes at 250core, whereas the ti500 comes at 240(iirc) and the gf4 is faster than the gf3, also the ram can clock higher, and the core can clock higher 2.

The 4200 owns the 500.

what it looks like is your processor is limiting your video card. You won't see an improvement between the 2 cards till you hit about 1.5ghz+, that's when the 4200 will really shine.
