GA 78lmt-usb3 with FX6300 or FX4130 won't get to post screen, fans spin, no beeps. OK with Sempron CPU.Tried vari

New build of either FX4130 or FX6300 CPU with 78LMT-USB3 or GA 970A-D3P mobo, works with sempron CPU, but not with the quad core CPUs.

BIOS carefully updated, CMOS cleared. Booted with Sempron after BIOS updated. Can't get the quads to POST screen. Fans spin, no beeps. 550 W psu. Tried with no peripherals, various psu's, various ram.

Do I need a bigger PSU: 600W?

You should be fine with the 550w psu, hav eyou updated the bios to the latest version? I know you said you updated it but I don't know to which release you updated it to.

I got it from GA site yesterday, 78lmt, FA is the suffix. For the 970A board it was F5 I think. Currently am trying the 'save to second BIOS rom' check, and recording the bios number to make sure it's actually saving the bios during first boot.

On the 78lmt-usb3 we have bios version FA, which is the latest. Battery has been out of board for ten minutes. boot with FX4130 and no beep no POST, fans spinning.
It boots up with the sempron into windows 7, and is fine, but no FX cpu seems to run, at least neither the 95w FX6300 nor the 125w FX4130.
I have four cpus and two mobos, none of which work together, except with the sempron cpu.

NOTE: Adding a system fan: now when booting, still no POST, but the sys fan roars up and down in speed like a teenager revving his car motor, as if the system is trying to set it correctly. Hmm.

OK, fixed it, thanks to related posts on associated BIOS flashing tricks.
The Strontium 1600 RAM seems to be causing the issue.

FIX: After removing all case connectors, putting in A-DATA 4GB 1333 RAM, with FX cpu installed and successful BIOS update checked, the 'clear CMOS' pins are shorted with a screwdriver. Box restarted, fans all roaring at max, no POST. Turn power off, short 'clear CMOS' pins again and restart. Now fans go quietly and box boots to POST, shows message 'load last good BIOS setting?' press enter and it boots and runs win 7 OK.

Remove A-DATA 1333 stick and replace with 4GB Strontium 1600, no POST again. Put A-DATA 1333 back in, POST ok.

In my case I have that same Gigabyte 78LMT-USB3 motherboard, 4 x 8GB Strontium 1600 dims and a AMD Phenom II X6 1055T processor. That's been working fine for about 6 months. I bought a FX-6300 on sale and installed it. No boot - jut as you describe. I had some older Strontium 4GB 1333 ram so I dropped that in and tried it - no problems!.

The only thing is I really need the 32GB setup (white-box server for study) so its not much of a fix.

Did you find any better solution? Did you contact Gigabyte?

Yeah no. After my last post I put the original Strontium 1600 back in a voila, it worked too. It is running two 8GB sticks of 1600 Mhz RAM now with the FX6300 6 core no probs.

It looks like the combination of high-speed RAM and the FX is too much for the BIOS to cope with, so it can't set itself properly. So, putting in the low speed RAM gets the settings into a bootable state with the Sempron, that will also boot the FX series.
then you boot up with the FX and let it restart a few times to save the BIOs well. ( It has dual BIOS, so it might revert back to the saved second copy, causing no boot again, if you don't boot completely with the slow RAM first.)

Then, when stable with the 1333, and FX, swap in the 1600 and it boots up OK. The PSU wattage doesn't seem to be a factor.

Sequence: Clear CMOS. insert Sempron with 1333 RAM. power up, update and save BIOS, reboot, confirm good BIOs update at normal boot by pressing enter at prompt.
boot again. shutdown. clear CMOS by battery removal. Change to FX, with 1333 RAM. Reboot, should boot OK. get to windows. shutdown. put in 1600 RAM, restart, should be OK. If not, clear cmos by removal of battery again and wait a few minutes. try 1600 again. If not try 1333 and clear cmos, then boot completely and then put the 1600 back in etc.

If initial fx boot has 1600 RAM, BIOs seems to freak out, not boot and then load old BIOS version from second BIOS ROM, blowing away the update. thus you aren't booting your new BIOS after that... making it very confusing.

Unfortunately no matter what combination I tried (my fingers not have permanent indentations from the ram stick edges) I just can't get my combination to boot. Perhaps your Sempron is more of a difference or there is another variation in the ram.

Hopefully Gigabyte will reply to the inquiry I lodged with them and they will have a suggestion too. I'll post back if they do or if I find another solution.

It's tricky alright. Once you've got your BIOS update to stick, the trick seems to be clearing the CMOS before booting up the faster RAM. Leaving the battery out for ten minutes isn't a bad idea either. Hope you solve it.
