and a cdrw & cd rom as master & slave od IDE2.

I have just been given a dvd drive - can I use this on IDE3?
I plugged it in, but no joy.

I think you need to enable IDE3 in the BIOS.

Cheers.

In most cases, ATAPI drives will only be recognised when connected to the
primary IDE sockets. Move your hard disks to IDE3, In fact, you may find
that Windows prefers to boot from IDE3 when it is enabled in the BIOS.

IDE 3 & 4 are the ITE Gigaraid ports .... you'll need to enable them in the
bios and install the drivers for them in windows. Should work ok after that
..... let us know

thanks for the help so far...

enabled onboard raid

enabled gigaraid & set it to ata

put hard drives on ide3

set bios bootup to hdd3 (also tried 0,1 & 2)

but the best I could achieve was that gigaraid detected the 2 hard drives,

but after that it would continually re-boot!

running bios f5 by-the-way & win xp home

any ideas?

Hi Mark,

I have all four IDE ports enabled in the BIOS, but no RAID drivers
installed. I boot from a FAT32 drive on the main IDE controller port 1
master - Winp XP Pro. All other connections on the main IDE controller are
used by or reserved for ATAPI devices. The other IDE controller has
removable hard disk trays and I install various combinations or FAT32 or
NTFS drives as needed. I installed Windows before fitting any other hard
drives. Windows in its wisdom wants to default to booting from the master
disk on port 1 of the second controller, and does if I install a disk with
an operating system on it. As I only use my data disks in the second
controller, it words reliably for me.

Maybe you need to look at disk management and see which drive Windows wants
to be the first and plan accordingly.
