Hi everyone,

I might be switching to Core i7 myself and I did some research on which components I should get and actually I decided that the Gigabyte X58 UD5 would be a good board to do some nice overclocking.

However, now I've read this I'm getting scared. Is that 'double boot' issue only present on Gigabyte boards or do other brands face the same problem? Please some advice here.

And according to the last post, it can be fixed with bios version F7C, but it cannot be found on gigabytes website so is it a beta bios or something like that? Does it really work BTW? If someone flashed to F7C too, please report your opinion.
 
Yes, its a beta bios - but it works great.

The issue is routed on memoery compatibility issues which runs through pretty much the entire x58 series.

I wouldn't be scared of buying a gigabyte board, they are a quality product and worth the money. The double boot thing isnt a serious issue (people are syaing it strains components but thats a bit of an exaggeration). Once its on its just like normal.

F7C stopped it for me so we just have to wait and see if it fixes it for others.
 
Thanks to clarify that a bit more, adamscybot. It took me some time to decide which board to get and when I finally decided Gigabyte would work out the best for me, I read things like this.

Anyway, it will take some time before I'm gonna buy all the neccesairy components, so by then there will probably be an official bios version and we will know whether it really worked on large scale.
 
I have a very similar problem. System:

Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 BIOS F8f
Intel i7 920
2 x 295gtx platinum Inno 3d cards in quad SLI
6gb 2000mhz Gskill Trident Kit
4 x SATAII Seagate drives in RAID0 (intel chip)
1000 Antec PSU (True Power Quattor I think)

I can not set the memory to its default speed of 2000mhz (XMP or manual)
I can not overclock the system at all, any setting changes from detault (for CPU/Memory) makes the system hang before POST

I am getting really bad performance (Vista64 Ultimate) for this kind of system. Running at default settings (1066mhz ram speed unfortunantly) im getting 17000 score on 3dmark06 (I got higher than this with my old system which was an Asus p5Q/E8500/4gb Gskill 1100mhz ram/260GTX). Playing Microsoft FSX (what I upgraded for) is getting me around 6-10 FPS. Used to get a solid 20FPS on the old system with much higher detail settings than what Ive been trying!

Very dissapointed. Nobody has had any advice yet from Gskill/Gigabyte/Forums which has been able to help get the system working at even 'normal' settings let alone overclocked.

I have seen others with the motherboard running this CPU at 4ghz+ with no problems. Seems the only difference is the video cards and ram, so Im thinking it must be a ram related setting?
 
I thought the gig ud5 would be the best choice for me but now i hear another bad comment about it, i'm having serious doubts about it.
If someone can confirm that all of these problems can be solved by flashing to another bios version, please post.
 
Im using a x58-ud4p board + 6x1 g.skill 1600 with an f7 bios and i occasionally get the dreaded double boot.

The only remedy i can find is leaving auto timings on cl8 increase ddr multi to 10 & up ddrv to 1.54v. This leaves me at 1333mhz or up to 1500 on a slight oc with no issues at all. I havent seen a reboot for 6 months.

If i change everything back to full auto at 1066 - reboot
If i go over 1500 with any qpi or ddr voltage increase- reboot
If i use auto + xmp - reboot

What is this? my board or ram issues? I think a g.skill or gigabyte tech should respond

I got a 400 point benchmark increase from 1033 to 1333 so id like to see 1600 some day stable. Any suggestions?

Things could be worse tho, i got a 17800 w/oc bench with 1 gtx 260 and i see the guy who posted a couple posts above me hit 17000 in quad sli.
 
I was reading up some more on some later bios versions. Im sort of skeptical to reflash as i heard f8 only lets you have an 8x multiplier. I guess its gigabytes way of fixing the problem for good. I dont & cant say for certain if f9 will fare any better.

I get even more perplexed as i rummage through g.skills forums and i keep reeading a g.skill tech or fanboy (not sure who) screaming "you cant occupy all 6 slots with triple channel over 1333) again and again. Go buy corsair or OCZ)." Why would they keep letting this guy post?
 



I too have the FF code. Board GA-EX58-UD5, 920, OCZ XMP Ready Series 6GB (3 x 2GB), Dual (sometime tri) boot at cold. Message saying some type of overclocking failure and settings might not be what I started with. (Something like that).

At first I thought it was just something I was doing wrong and I kept scratching my head. I came across this group looking for something else. Guess I am not alone in this type of occurance.
 
Its funny to me that we have here a full thread of memory issues and hardly a single mention of QPI voltage.

For me, getting stable at ddr3 1600 @ tight timings (CL6/7) on an i7 920 all came down to QPI voltage. While I *should* be able to run stable at QPI 1.325 - 1.375v with my D0 920 I have to set it up to 1.435v which, ironically, is the 'auto' setting for QPI on my EX58-UD3R when the memory multiplier is set to 1600mhz.

So I recommend you look at your QPI voltage if you are having trouble getting stable at DDR3 1600 or higher. These i7's seem to have terribly inconsistent memory controllers when "overclocking" to higher mem speeds than the default 1066.

Oh, and I had to RMA the OCZ Platinum ddr1600 7-7-7 which I bought with the system because it would not run stable at any QPI or DRAM voltage. Sent it in for a refund and bought some Mushkin RedLine ddr3 1600 6-7-6 to replace it and now I am finally stable. Mushkin saved the day and right now I am in love with this brand of RAM. Highly recommended. Tightest timings I've seen on triple channel memory regardless of the speed. Very nice.

Just some thoughts. Don't give up -- I was 99% sure that I had a bad CPU and nothing would get it stable but it just took some functioning RAM and a little more juice on the QPI. Good luck.

I bought UD5, i7 950, and Dominator GT 1866 (7-8-7-20-2T) last week. After having the cold boot problem for about 7 days, I have spent few days on reading all kind of posts about ex58-UD5 boards, and another two days on testing my system with all kind of voltages/frequencies, it seems to me that I found solution, at least for myself. 😀

Everything is working like charm, no BSODs or any kind of errors. XMP profile on Corsair is 1.65V DDR3, 1.6V QPI, every reset is OK, but starting after shutdown (1h,2h) was always double boot. I try all kind of BIOS versions (f7, f7d, f9e, f9h). But always the same. Even if I lower QPI voltage manual to 1.4V, 1.375V, double boot again.

But what if my QPI was still to high. So lower it again, to 1.315V. And BINGO. It's stable. No double boot. I even overclock i7 to 3500 Mhz (with turbo boost to 3700), QPI link 5600 Mhz, vcore 1.24V. NO double boot after disconnecting supply for whole night (and pressing on/off to discharge capacitors).

I don't know how to explain, why QPI cannot go any higher (at least for not suffering double boot). It must be in 0.5 V range with DDR, but I dont know does it have any connection with some other voltage?? It seems to me reasonable, because if you have very fast memory, guess you have fast processor, or at least intention to have it with overclock. I didnt try to upper vcore voltage, because there is no need, but maybe (just maybe) only higher vcore voltage will support higher QPI/uncore voltage (they both are on same silicon, logically there must not be great V difference).

I hope that some one tried f9 versions, because non of them working on me. I cannot boot XMP or manually specifying memory profile. On f7, works without problems.

Hi All,

Just to confirm I am having identical problems with the Gigabyte EX-UD5. I have a fresh Win7 install and the F9e BIOS

I have a i7 920 BCLK set at 150 (so slight overclock of 3.0MHz) RAM 6GB OCZ Blade 7-8-7-24 Triple channel set Runs at 2000MHz I am running it at 1800. I have Turbo mode on but in the main this is a mild overclock for the i7 920 and a memeory underclock according to the OCZ specs

Power on immediate almost Power off
Pause few seconds
Automatic Power on and post
Boots into Windows
Stable as a rock

I sometimes get a false start and an error saying that the system has reset due to overclocking or incorrect voltages but setting the optimised defaults doesnt seem to help this.

The Northbridge leds indicate a high voltage but I have no idea how or whether it is possible to lower it in the BIOS

Going to try the QPI Voltage adjustment next as in vjelovic's post above

and I agree the Gigabyte people are very slow to reply and sometimes when they do their answers arent exactly verbose, I guess this is mainly down to the language problem

 
Your northbridge voltage control is on the second of the "MB Intelligent Tweaker(M.I.T.)" pages, and is labeled "IOH Core" (nothbridges used to be labeled MCH [memory control hub], but since the advent of the new platforms with the on-die memory controllers, are called IOHs [input/output hub])...

Thx Bilbat thats a nice looking simple guide. I adjusted my memory ratio, QPI frequency and BCLK to keep them within limits but havent looked at the UnCore yet. Is the Northbridge part of the UnCore domain? and do you know what a normal VCore should be for a i7 920 processor by any chance?

Well in the spirit of giving something back here is what I ended up with

My homebuild: Core i7 920 (with D0 stepping), 6GB OCZ Blade 2000MHz 7-8-7-20 Triple channel ram kit, Gigabyte EX58-UD5 (BIOS F9e), Win7, Corsair HX1000 PSU, Noctua air cooler, Silverstone TJ09 case.

Condensing about 4 hours work into a few lines

1. Loaded optimised defaults
2. Set up RAM settings using the SPD (Quick) option in the BIOS according to manufacturers specs, set DRAM voltage to 1.56V and System memory multiplier to 12.
So initially RAM frequency was around 1600 MHz

Clock Ratio started and stayed on x20
QPI ration started and finished on Auto as did uncore voltage
Set Base clk to 140
Turned Turbo mode off

This was my base setup that was stable

Then increased BCLK from 140 - 170 in increments ot 5 rebooting each time to check stability. When the RAM frequence rode above 1800. I kicked the multiplier down a notch and carried on.

The result a stable 3.4 GHz CPU overclock, memeory running at 1700 MHz

CPU core voltage rose from 35 degrees C (at 133) to 45 degrees (at 170)
VCore for the CPU rose from 1.204V to 1.36

So far it has been rock stable
 
I'm having *similar* but unique problems as everyone here.

My setup:

GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD5
G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 F3-12800CL9T-6GBNQ
Intel Core i7-920
Antec EarthWatts EA650 650W
DIAMOND AIWHD3650 Radeon HD 3650 (a little old, but has HDTV tuner)


I bought all the components, fired up the comp, and installed Windows 7 without a hitch. I never even looked at the BIOS, let alone changed any settings. I went to get someone to show off the system and when I came back THE WHOLE THING HAD SHUT OFF.

When I turned it back on, it immediately shut off before POST. I pressed the power button again, NO RESPONSE. After waiting ~20 seconds, it turned on again, but immediately shut off before POST again. This happened about 10 times and it finally turned on.

The system will work fine for a long time (1-2 hours) and then will shut off randomly and without warning. Nearly every time I have to restart or turn it back on, I get the same shut-off-before-POST problems as before.

Anybody got this system working (3channel Gskill 1600 and UD5)? If so, what bios rev, mem settings did you use?
 
Hello everyone. I'm very happy I FINALLY have a thread / forum where people have the EXACT same problem as I have ... :)

I have bought my computer a few months ago (june 2009). The most important specs are:
- Gigabyte UD4P with 3 x 2 Gb Corsair memory (frequency1333 MHz)
- Intel i920 processor
- Nvidia GTX275 card
- 2 Hard Disks from Western Dgital (1 green & 1 black) HD's (both 500 Gb)
- Corsair 620 HX power supply
- Antec P182

System = latest BIOS (no beta): F8 2009/05/11

Problem:
- The RAM frequency is 1066 MHz, I never tried to adjust something in BIOS (to 1333 is the frequency of my RAM!) since the PC is runnig super fine!
- HOWEVER ... once in a while the PC boots up, and the last thing I see on the screen is the memory settings (as in '1066 MHz - Memtest OK), after that the PC just reboots: power off --> fans blowing 100 % for a few seconds (as always when the PC boots) - screens shows some info and so on --> no problem this second boot.

And the problem is: PC always stable as a rock after that!

My question: Should I worry and bye a new motherboard, I don't want to change my motherboard when I have a chance that it is not, a stable as the one I have now (apart from the, sometimes 'dual boot' I have ...)?

And do the experts on this forum have a solution for this 'a bit annoying' problem?

I would also like to have a solution where I have sttings where I can run my RAM to 1333 MHz in stead of the 1066 it is running now (stable)

i was going to buy ex58 ud5.....but looking at this thread i am in serious double mind.............cant decide...can u guys help in suggesting another motherboard in the same price range...from intel,asus,gigabyte,msi ?

I always had the double-boot issue and even thought it was a normal procedure of the UD5. Eventually, when Winter kicked in and times started to get colder, the dreaded multiple-boot and loss of over-clock settings started to occur (also, this would only ever happen if the computer had been off for a long while - especially if the immediate environment was left cold).

It seems to me that the board is sensitive to particular BIOS settings. In my case I just reduced my QPI/Vtt voltage (from Auto) to a decent value for my Uncore multiplier. Problem solved
Later, just to test, I tried raising my QPI/Vtt, manually, to see if the problem would show up again and, yup, it did.

Since then, I've moved from the UD5 F7 firmware to using F9e (S3 sleep didn't work in F7, for me). With the latter, I'm able to get away with using the higher QPI/Vtt voltages that I tried in F7 (without altering anything else) without multiple/double-boot occuring.
 
When peeps talk about their settings can the please try to put actual values that work for them rather than just describing them as high or low which really is about as useful as a chocolate fireguard 😛

I have the ex58-ud5 and the G.Skill 6GB DDR3-1600 memory combo. I just got it last week and it came with Bios 7 installed. I have had no double startups and my system seems very fast. I had one BSOD for unknown reasons, but none since.

Today, I turned on the XMP profile to get 1600 instead of 1066 on my memory. Everything seems to be fine, except I noticed the green and yellow CPU overvoltage lights and the green Northbridge overvoltage lights are now on. Unfortunately, the manual does not indicate the VOLTAGE RANGES that these lights correspond to. Right now, I have to assume that the lights are glitch and that my voltages are fine. I guess I could turn off the XMP profile and record my voltages, then turn XMP back on and compare to see if they even changed at all.

Anyone else with this issue?
 
I am glad to have found this forum too. I built a new pc for my step dad and it was working great until they came to pick it up over the holidays. I used a GA-EX58-UD5 Rev 1.0 board with 6GB Mushkin Triple Channel Enhanced Blackline DDR3 1333 #998677 7-7-7-20 Ram and an i7920 with an ATI 4890. I thought that would be a great game machine and it was. I ran it enough with the Win7 Pro to say it was a good stable build. Then I added some software like AV, Spybot, Firefox, Thunderbird, and the games...It still was working great. Then I turned it off and got busy before the holidays and a few days before they drove over from many states away I fired it up again. It was blue screens and error messages like I had never seen before. :ouch: So I told him we would work out the bugs that magically appeared for no apparent reason. I updated the bios to F6 but I think thats what it had. I updated the ATI drivers. I looked at all the error msgs and deleted some of the software that wasn't compatible or at least appeared to be conflicting. In the end I removed the ATI drivers and things kept getting better. I was down to the one blue screen on boot up with a MEMORY MANAGEMENT error and on second boot the thing runs flawless from then on, until the next morning after it sits and gets cold. The cold weather wasn't here when it ran good before and I was thinking the cold weather had something to do with or maybe the PS. Its a Corsair 750 watt new one and I ran all the tests with OCCT etc. I tested the ram etc...I told him its probably a BIOS issue but we would have to wait...

Try installing the latest BIOS. Version 7 can be found on the Gigabyte website. There are three newer versions: 2 beta versions are available on the same website. There is also a version 8 that is available by searching with Google for ex58ud5 and f8.
