TheStagGamer :
I've tested a ps3 and a xbox 360 controller on my pc. The sound is played when they are plugged in and I have installed all the drivers (windows and third party) to try and get them to work, but still no luck. Even though they are detected from being plugged in and windows goes though installing some of the driver for it, it still doesn't work or appear in the game controllers window:

(Running on win 10 64 bit BTW)
Any help and suggestions would be great!
Thanks

It's because MS has bullied their way to having most game developers using very specific xinput files for the pc 360 controller. Over the course of the last 20 years they've all but dominated the pc market now. The only aftermarket controllers that will get read on their own in games use it.
However there is a workaround that I found last year:

Sometimes very easy to use, sometimes a little tricky. You have to set it up for each game(copy needed files into the games root .exe directory) but once done you're set. I used it for my laptop so I could use a bluetooth android game controller and not have any dongles or cords.
Years ago I also tried to set up the bluetooth PS3. Its doable but usually has to rewrites your bluetooth firmware which totally disables any normal bluetooth devices and you have to reinstall your factory firmware/drivers to re-enable thus being a total pain. X360ce is by far the easiest thing I've found to get out of the MS controller strangehold.
