Game only runs through a VPN

(I'm sorry if this would be better suited to the Gaming sub-forum, but I felt it was more of a networking issue.)

So recently I purchased PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds to play with friends. When I first got the game (specifically the first night) I was able to play without issue, yet when I logged in the following afternoon I was no longer able to join a game at all (A connection timeout error).

I realised that it was likely an issue with my internet connection, so I tried using a VPN, and voila, it worked (albeit with serious lag). The next day I tried playing again without a VPN, and it worked for a single game, before the issue reappeared, and I have been unable to play without a VPN since.

So, I was wondering if anyone far more tech-savvy than I could point me to a solution, or help me identify the specific problem. From checking the PUBG forums I can see that a considerable amount of players have had the same issue as I have, and the recycled responses from the support staff have been pretty unsatisfactory to be honest.

Some pertinent info:
- I have a strict NAT type.
- My local ISP (I live in the boonies) blocks torrents (I'm not sure what that might mean for p2p gaming, though games like For Honor have given me no issues).
- The only other game which has given me similar issues was CSGO, where after an update, I was no longer able to play.
- I have tried using Google's Open DNS to no avail, and temporarily disabling Windows Defender and Windows Firewall. No dice.

Thanks for reading.

Playerunknown is not a p2p game it has central server farms. Not sure what to suggest, it is highly unlikely a ISP would care about any game traffic since it is extremely small compared to something like youtube. There is a chance the game servers have some kind of restriction on ip from certain locations, I do not know the game well enough to say. Other wise I would be looking at the firewall on your pc or maybe your router to be blocking traffic. You could try to ping some of the game server ip but they may configured to not respond even when the game works correctly, again I have no knowledge of that game. This may be best asked on the game companies forum, I do not think it is a generic network issue. There is not much...
