Hi. i recently downloaded the 64 bit windows 7 rc 7100, and upgraded to that from the windows 7 beta. on the beta i could game fine and never had any crashes. Now that i have windows 7 rc ( with proper drivers, direct x, etc.) EVERY game i play crashes after 5 to 10 minutes. In crysis it just quits. In CoD5 ill be playing and then it freezes and the sky turns black/ white lines/ colors usually come out of the barrel of my gun when its frozen (they done move, it almost looks like my lcd shattered), and everything onscreen looses reflections and becomes bland. In GTA IV is crashes. i can browse the internet fine without issue and the system is stable enough to run for hours. other than gaming the beta is great. I am frustrated and need help thanks. Heres my system if it helps:
i7 920 @ 4GHz w/ TRUE heatsink lga 1366.... yes its stable
GTX 260 OC'd to 750MHz core clock
4GB DDR3 1333mhz
850w thermaltake black widow psu
MSI x58 pro motherboard
---plenty of airflow with nzxt nemesis elite case-----

keep in mind that it is the same overclock as it was in the beta and the beta did not have any issues
thanks

Hi all,

I've run the Windows 7 64bit ultimate RTM now for 2 months (msdn subscription...), and I am having these exact same problems... I did a clean install of win7 ultimate on a formatted HD.

Just about every game is just freezing in random times, COD 4, COD 6, Crysis, etc. Sound goes to a loop, screen either goes out of sync or it goes to a stripe pattern.

My pc:
Intel i7 920 cpu
Ati HD4800 series
Asus P6T motherboard
Team combo SSD HD
6gb memory

I've applied all latest drivers, including the display drivers released yesterday to ATI website, still no problem. I've done MEM test, no problems. I've been monitoring CPU temps and it always stays between 47 and 60C.

On normal use the computer is very fast and extremely stable, I haven't been able to get it to crash after hours of CS4 working...

Looking at the previous posts I am getting very convinsed this is not a hardware related problem after all as the HW described the other users is very versatile...

***EDIT***

I was able to run Civilations 4 on the computer without any problems...

hello i1m running win 7 64 bit with 9800gx2 video card,8600cpu,etc i dont have crash issues in crysis the only problem i have is mouse issues which i finally fixed by using the direct x 9 link when you right click int the game tab for some reason win 7 is not direct x 10 friendly

Try a fresh install. Window is notorious for crappy upgrades all the way back to win95. Try this fresh install using upgrade software.

I read somewhere that the culprit might be Win 7's UAC. Turning that off might solve the problem. I couldn't test it yet because I don't have access to my computer right now.

I have been working on this issue for ever as well. I have an amazing system and mine still does the same thing. I found out that the fan on the 260 gtx is set as a default to only spin at 40%. If you go to guru3d.com and download rivatuner you can change the percentage of the fan speed to somewhere in the 85'ish range and it will do 9's in the quarter mile. Hope this helps.

P.S. I believe that program will tell you the temp before you change it as well so you can see how toasty it has been getting.. I suggest subjecting it to a massive beating and letting it lock up.. then immediately go into Rivatuner after it restarts and check. .I bet that puppy is up in the 70's.

Hi Guys,
I have the same problem but when you play your games at 1024 by 768. You don't have crashes.
But this isn't the fix you want.
But is it a windows 7 problem or a driver problem.
I have a MSI 260 gtx

Reinstall windows, make sure there are no errors during installation, download direct x web installer, and current drivers for your hardware including chipset.

been there done that,

Clean installation, upgrade installation. Drivers from the msi website, nvidia driver, nvidia beta drivers, windows standard driver. Direct x 10 direct x 11. No overheating.

Hmm,

the plot thikcens. I have been franticly trying to get the system to work, and I've been through GPU and CPU temperatures, testing the Power supply voltages, drivers after drivers and nothing seems to do the trick.

Now I put a second hard drive, installed WinXP 32, and even that it is slightly more stable, it does the exact same thing as Windows 7 64bit.

I'm really starting to suspect a hardware problem with my Display adapter, but how do you convince others there is a problem when you can play for a while before evertyhing crashes, and the problem only presents itself during games...

Note, GTA IV unstable as well...

I think i have fixed the problem but i have fixed in to ways.
1
When i use my old 9800 gtx card i dont have crashes.
A 9800 is a directx 9c card when is use a HD5870 i dont have crashes thats a directx11 card.
When i use my 260 gtx thats a direct x 10 card i have crashes on the high graphic details in games.
I think the problem is direct x 10 cards.

2
After i did a clean install windows 7 64x ultimate and i installed a old directx 9 game (swat 4) i could play call of duty modern warfare 2 on the highest resolution.
But when i go to de advanced video menu and put Anti-Aliasing on 4x it crashes in the game or my Screen refresh rate higher then my monitor hardware setting for me is it in the nividia menu 60hz en in call of duty i could set it on 75hz it crashes in the game.
Its still not working with the settings i want but i can play my games (dirt 2, Call of duty 4, Call of duty 6, Fall out 3, need for speed shift) with out crashes.
Now we must wait till the moment that Microsoft build a fix or nvidia and ati build a new driver.
But i think its a microsoft problem.

I have the same problem as well. My specs are about the same as Dr Pain's but I know my hardware is good. This same rig was running Vista 32 bit with the same games with no problem but as soon as I wiped and installed Windows 7 64, I started experiencing the crashing.

Same problem her, but only in Windows 7,

My config:

Core i7920 OC 4GHZ, Tuniq Extrem Tower 120 (stable and fresh, 65°C)
6GB DDR3 Kingston HyperX-T1 2000MHZ
2TB Hitachi Deskstar 7200RPM
Nvidia GTX 275 OC 720 Core Clock
OCZ 600W ModxStream Pro
CM Storm Sniper Case
8X LG BlueRay Writer/Reader
AverMedia TvTuner

Everything works fine until i want to play a new game (old games runs fine), but new games COD4, The witcher, SWTFU, BatmanAA, etc, crash after 5 - 10 minutes of playing.

I hate this, any solutions?

Hello people,

I too have the same problem. And they're different with each game and even programs. Usually i get the message that "****.exe has stopped working" (GTAIV, MW2, Dragon age origins (which i can actually play for a long time before it crashes usually), other random programs like Traktor).

I also get the following thing in Battlefield 1942, black screen in main menu (only hear the music).

Another thing i had, and which i'd like to make a remark of, is the fact that i had to do a system recovery cause of a problem with a program i installed (no similar problems after i did this like a month ago)

The final thing i get is memory dumps, but they only occurred after long times of playing. (happened to me maybe 3 times in a month)

It's frustrating to the bone, and i don't know who to blame... I think it's Windows 7 itself, but it could be my 260gtx as well (since i've seen that one being posted in this topic quite often)... Im practically sure it isn't a hard drive problem.

I really hope you guys can't find a solution to this problem or atleast find the cause of it... I've checked many forums but no one seems to have the real answer, nor does anyone know where the actual cause lies...

My system specs are:

- Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_rtm.090713-1255)
- Gigabyte EP43T-UD3L
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 896,00 MB (939.524.096 bytes)
- Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz, 2667 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s) (53 degrees celcius)
- 2x 4 GB DDR3-1600 Kit (4096 MB)
- 1TB 7200RPM Western Digital
- Coolermaster Silent Pro M 600W (600 Watt) TN6M50

No clocking
Every temperature below 53 degrees celcius (most around 35 degrees celcius)
Have had a blue screen before (as stated above)

Once again, it's extremely frustrating since the only games i can play properly are Dragon age and Warcraft III-TFT... I really hope you can provide me with the answer!

Best regards,

Slickzor

*small update: I don't have any blackscreen in BF1942 now... But i get the "****.exe has stopped working" error again

i ve also got the same issue with windows 7 ultimate x64 retail (dutch)
but this issue also exists with battlefield 2 v1.1(that game is so old that most of you dont even know it anymore)
i think i am going back to the good old xp 😀

well this is my rig

Hey everyone,
For 3 weeks, since I upgraded my cpu, mobo and ram and installed windows 7, i have been trying to figure out why my games are crashing after 5 mins. I've been all over the forums and I've seen a lot of people with the exact same problem but never an answer.
I have finally found the problem (for me anyway). My GPU is overheating. I figure that windows 7 is interrupting when the gpu gets to a certain temp.
I used rivatuner to crank the gpu fan and no more crashing. I'm going out tomorrow to buy more cooling stuff. Hope this helps.

Windows 7 x64 Pro
Core 2 Duo E8400 3.3ghz
4gb OCZ Fatal1ty PC8500
Asus P5N-T Deluxe
EVGA 9800gtx
Ultra 750w ps

*After posting this i realized i still have a game crashing on me, sorry.

@Plazer, up to what temperature did your GPU go? I think mine went to 55 degrees celcius which shouldn't be too much trouble. Think i'm going to crank up the fan as well then, it's such a bloody pain that my games keep crashing and i have no idea why.

I've already got a big ass cooler and it seems nothing is overheating, but i'd like to know how hot your GPU gets after you've cranked up the fan speed. Could you tell me a bit more about that? Would greatly appreciate it :)

Turns out one of my games is still crashing (arma 2), sorry if i got anyone excited, my other older game seems to be running though (joint operations; typhoon rising). So the temp might not be the root of the problem after all. playing arma 2 i got up to 71 Celsius without cranking the fan before it crashed. then i cranked the fan and it got to 65 and crashed. If you have a big ass cooler then I'm probably wrong about the temperature being the problem. damn it. this is driving me nuts.
I ran memtest and BurnInTest and everything is stable. however i monitored the temp when I ran BurnInTest and found it didn't really push the card. It only raised to temp 2degrees Celsius.
do you know of something i can run to really push my card that isnt a game? I want to see what happens when i get the temperature up doing something other than playing a game.

Omg plazer, i actually think u are right by kicking the fan up... I had Speedfan in the background while i was trying to play MW2, what happened is it shut down and an icon of fire appeared in speedfan with my GPU which had gone from 49 degrees celcius to 57 degrees in just a minute... I'm going to speed up the thing drastically to get rid of that problem. If that works i owe u huge gratitude :)

Edit: Why i think this is the problem is because Windows 7 or the video driver might just have some sort of temperature limit build in for GPU's ... That when it comes to a certain amount of heat generated, it just shuts down the app... I think that if the temperature keeps rising even after I kicked up the fan i'm going to have to buy a big ass cooler for the GPU.. I actually said i had a big cooler but that was my CPU and not my GPU (bit tired when i read it i guess 😉) .. I'm taking this answer and check out if it's actually the problem. If so, i'll post what i did here...

Other suggestions still welcome though! 😉

Edit 2: I've tried to boost my GPU speeds, actually worked since it was only at 25%... But no difference whatsoever... Same crashes... This is the error report that MW2 gave me, maybe someone can do something with it:

I'm going mental here trying to figure out what the problem is... I personally still blame windows 7 64 bit ultra myself... :pfff:

same misfortune here....game crashes after 5-10 min... even with good old xp! I don't know what to do anymore, think I've tried everything: rising the fan speed, installing newest drivers, win7 64bit, vista 32bit , testing hardware... ant everything works fine, till I start the game....maybe I sould try linux, if that doesn't help I'll buy ati

I can't believe it... I just played arma 2 for 2 hours with no crashes.

I took the side panel off and cranked the gpu fan to 95% with rivatuner. I ran the temp monitor in the background, it got to a max of 49 degrees Celsius. Something (either the nvidia driver or windows 7) is definitely shutting down games when the gpu gets too hot. I'm not sure what temperature is the limit, but so far my games run with no problems at 49 degree celsius.

Try getting the gpu temp down under 50 while playing and post if it works.

*Update: I installed another fan and a blower and closed up my case. I was running arma 2 with my gpu temp hitting a max or 51 degrees Celsius. I didn't play too long but I didn't have any crashes. I hope to give it a really good workout tonight. I will let you know if it works.

Actually i still have MW2 that crashes, but i can play Mass Effect 2 without a single problem... It's just so extremely weird..

I'd like to hear what happened eventually plazer, i didn't have any luck so far with the cranking up of the fan speed... It's 200% faster than it did, and the temp is at max 47 degrees celcius. Hope you finally found the fix, then i'm going to try and crank it up even more to get it done.
