I bought a R9 290 yesterday.
I was unable to play any games which put a load on the card because the game will crash (rather quickly).
I did a fresh install of windoes to make sure it wasn't a driver problem.

I have now discovered that this card only works stable once I have reduced the clock rate by about 300ms. (740 as opposed to 1040) this just doesn't really seem right

I have a thermaltake power supply of 850 watts, and it used to run 2x 6950's in SLI. my old cards required 2x 75 watt 6 pins and the 290 requires a 75w 6 pin and a 150w 8 pin.

Help! I haven't seen an issue like this before, and i'm confused as to whether it's my card being faulty, or some other problem.

Thanks in advance

RMA it. Could be multiple things but the first thing that came to mind was that it probably had the thermal paste applied wrong when assembling the card leading to it overheating when it tries to go under load thus forcing you to downclock the card to be able to stay at a reasonable temp.

I slowly started ramping up my clock speed. my temperature was at 56 degrees celcius when it crashed. It does seem like it will always crash whenever it reaches about that temperature though... maybe... seems a bit quick really. will crash probably within say 5 seconds after it being put under load
