Just realized I mistyped. I am getting all Zektor SPEECH with a modded Star
Trek speech board and unmodified ST Universal sound board.

Do you mean the Zektor board is really a slightly-modded Eliminator, or that
the Zektor/Eliminator can be made from a Universal or Space Fury board with
a few additions ?

Who knows what they were up to back then... Could have been shortages or
they just wanted to save the $$$ on the chip. It's also quite possible that
Zektor was meant to use up some leftover components from Eliminator and they
simply couldn't get their hands on enough 8912's at the time.

(The were all kinds of wild component shortages back then since there was a
sudden rush of video game stuff-- remember that the Vectrex entered
production at about the same time and used the 8912, so procurement could
have been tricky if Gremlin/Sega didn't have orders on the books.)

The probably were also transitioning to the USB about then, so they might
not have wanted to commit to any stock for 'old' technology... Who knows...

Most likely because they thought they would use it, but never did. That chip
is also on the Eliminator sound card schematics incidently, but not on the
board.

All I know is I have Zektor speech working without even a Zektor sound board, so I
obviously don't have that chip on there.

: and in the manual it called a speech board decoder chip.

Manuals have been known to be wrong. Sega manuals especially. I have a set
of original Star Trek manuals, and a previous owner has written across the
cover:

DISREGARD THIS MANUAL
NOT APPROVED BY STAR FLEET COMMAND

Wire colors wrong in places.
Bag is wrong in places.

(I have no idea what 'Bag' referse to. His handwritting is bad, this is the
best we can make it out.)

eliminator has the socket, but not the chip.

well, my zektor manual looks right to me.
when there's a error they include a supplement explaining the error.
the only supplements in the manual are, a correction for the monitor.
it tells you to upgrade to two part in the monitor, to solve it's troubles.
and a recommended spare parts list for it.

RIGHT -- which is why a multi-sound board solution is needed. THAT'S what
we are talking about.
