Games look choppy when dropping below 100fps on a 60hz monitor

I really need someone to help with me with some strange fps issues I'm having. Aside from the fact that I've lost about 30fps across the board on my Gpu, I have an issue that no one ever seems to know the answer to.

I play at high frame-rates but will occasionally drop to below 100fps on my 60hz monitor. When this happens it looks as though my Fps is in the 40's, which makes absolutely no sense to me, considering my screen can only display 60fps anyway, so why would it be so choppy when it drops then? Anything above 120fps is smooth, but if I drop to 80-90 fps, it looks horrible. The same thing happened on my gtx 760, before I recently purchased a 970, so its not my gpu.

What is causing this, if its the same for everyone why aren't more people vocal about how awful 70-90fps looks?

Yeah V-Sync fixes the issue, but I cant use that on the game I want to, which is a competitive FP shooters, therefore requires low input lag.

That isn't the point though, I want to know why my game looks so choppy when its running at 90fps, it looks below 60 for sure (obviously so). I posted on Reddit and one person said its the same for everyone, but I rarely hear about it. I need an expert to tell me whats happening.

Rainbow six Siege, but it happens in all games. No Fast sync and the issue was present on a previous Gpu.

System

I5 4590
8gb 1600mhz ddr3
Gtx 970 Strix Foc
2tb HDD

The temps seem normal, Gpu 68-70 under load, Cpu around 60

I've reinstalled windows, played on a new monitor (60 hz), completely wiped everything etc. It seems this is just the way it is?

So anywhere between 70-110 will look under 60fps on a 60hz monitor?

You can force vsync on in the display settings, you don't need to do it for each game individually. As for why it's choppy, I think some monitors handle unusual frame rates better than others....yours obviously doesn't like those rates which are slightly higher than it's refresh rate.

Yeah for other games, I will allow it globally, but for competitive shooters V-sync must be off. It happens on my TV too, maybe i should invest in a better monitor, the one i have is fairly expensive at £150 new.

Not look? Could you rephrase that. I was talking about framerates between 70-100fps looking choppy not the fact that if you go under 60fps with V-sync enabled (which I stated), it will revert to 30fps.

I was talking about what you said here.

So anywhere between 70-110 will look under 60fps

Anything 70+ shouldn't look like it's under 60FPS. 80FPS shouldn't look like 45FPS. It should look like a choppy 60FPS seeing as that's what you are seeing. 80pictures being shown a second on a viewer that can only show 60. The frames will look horrible because you only get parts of them.

The choppiness may just be a personal feeling. I personally get nauseated under 75 FPS. People have different opinions on FPS rates. Frankly, to me, tearing is horrendous on a 60hz monitor, but almost not noticeable on a 120+hz monitor. If you are competitive, you should look for a better monitor.

Tearing is definitely a major issue for me on 60hz. It's quite specific though as 60fps is perfectly smooth, but if i did from under 100 to say 95, it feels like 50 fps, very choppy indeed. Maybe I'm super sensitive, but combined with ridiculous tearing its not exactly an enjoyable experience.

But it does, that's why I'm here and i cant find any solution. surely a choppy 60fps is going to feel like under 60fps, i dont understand the difference here. Why does it look completely fine after it reaches 100+. I can pinpoint the moment i feel like its under 60fps and its always when it dips just below 100.
