Games run WORSE than they did after upgrading.

So last year I bought a budget gaming PC build with an AMD FX-6300, 8GB of RAM and the GTX 960. Well recently since the 6300 is barely considered for 'minimum' anymore that I'd upgrade to the AMD FX-8350. But now after that upgrade my games run even worse. GTA V, Fallout 4, Rainbow Six Siege they all ran pretty well. They weren't Max settings but nice enough and all ran at 40-60 frames. After this upgrade however GTA V is getting 20fps on MEDIUM settings, Fallout 4 doesn't even launch and Siege is less than 10fps.

What could the problem be? Could it be the Motherboard? I'm running the ASRock - 970 Pro3 R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard, which I hear isn't the best MOBO for the 8350...most likely because the board is too small to fit the 8350's cooler so I'm still using 6300's cooler on the 8350.

Monitor the heat and clock rates to start with, to see what went wrong, but don't expect any improvement in gaming performance. There is almost no difference in performance between the 2 CPU's for the vast majority of games. Going from 6 cores to 8 cores doesn't make any difference in most games.

You just answered your question mate :)
The stock cooler of the FX-6300 is a bad option for gaming, thus during gaming, your CPU actually downclocks/throttles because the cooler simply couldnt cope with the temps/TDP of the FX 8350. Oh, the new cooler of the FX-8350 would just fit fine on the AM3+ bracket. Make sure, that you always clean and reapply thermal paste.

The motherboard should do just fine, I've seen some people use their FX-8xxx series chip on a 780 board.

Alright well I was able to somehow squeeze the heatsink onto the board, but there's no real difference except for the fact that my task manager at least says that I'm getting more than 1GHz out of my CPU. Other than that the games are still running as bad as they did before I put the heatsink on.

Did you apply any thermal paste?

I always have a tube or two with the rest of my computer tools 😉
