the system i will (hopefully) be getting for Christmas is an AMD Athlon XP 1600 1.4, 256 Mb DDR RAM,Geforce2 64 Mb,AC97 on-board sound and Windows XP Home Edition.
Anyway, how well (if at all), will the following games run on this system:
Operation Flashpoint
Return To Castle Wolfenstein
Alien Versus Predator2
Delta Force Land warrior (why do all novalogic games have annoying graphics engines 😡)

Thankyou gentlemen,
Merry Xmas

It really depends. Which GeForce2 do you have? If it's a GeForce2 MX-200 then they'll run but very slowly. Also your on-board AC97 sound is slowing you down.

AMD technology + Intel technology = Intel/AMD Pentathlon IV; the ULTIMATE PC processor

Yeah. It's one thing if you're listening to mp3's with the ac97, and another completely if it's 'in-game' music. That ac97 doesn't do generation very well, and the signal ratio sucks three holes sideways. Based on my ears, it's probably under 20dB.

If you use an MX, you'll have to keep the res. down to 800x600 just to get 30fps on all those games. And that's a dialed down 800x600. A GTS will let you crank up to 1024x768 and a gfx setting.

its a 64mb geforce2 mx400.The mobo is an MSi 6380 Motherboard.
Is the onboard sound really that bad,and would it slow the pc down that much?
I suppose i could always buy a new sound card for it, if you can disable the old one that is ! :)

That 64meg doesn't do much for you because the gpu/bandwidth can't handle it in the first place.

The southbridge sound is totally software driven. The southbridge just does the DAC to the connectors. Yes, it chews up cycles even on a 1.4ghz processor. Even more playing games (Mp3's don't chew up all that much).

If you're looked for numbers, I'd estimate a SB live will eat up 80mhz of cycles playing Mp3's (on any athlon at 133FSB), and the ac97 probably chews up 150mhz.

You mean when it reaches the level of a whisper, it's already distorted?
