[citation][nom]Yuka[/nom]Yeah, so hot I won't be touching it at all, hahaha.Always online DRM for the games (which they already confirmed) is a mayor stupid blow out to people.Guys, please don't give your money to Microsoft this gen; speak with your wallets so that stupid DRM practice stops once and for all!Cheers![/citation]

Show me this confirmation you speak of? I have yet to see an announcement from Microsoft stating "If you don't have a live internet connection, your games are useless." The exact wording of the leaker information (which has not been confirmed by microsoft) is "The Xbox 720 will always maintain a network connection" does not mean "Your xbox and games won't work if you don't have internet," it means exactly what it says. The way I read this "You cannot power off the xbox without removing the power cord. It will always be in a state with enough power to access the network card and perform updates."

How about goi all braveheart with facts instead of conjecture....

The 360 was pretty hot too, so hot it malfunctioned.

What exactly does he know that anyone else doesn't? Some backstage product demonstrations? Or is he just blindly trying to urge preorder sales? Kickbacks are one thing, but it won't be hot if the system ends up blocking used games.

I think both these consoles are hiding a lot behind PR that isn't going to come out until after the sales have been finalized. MS has been silent so far about the negative rumors, and Sony snuck around the question with "Yes, it can play used games." "Can" and "Will" are two different words, and PR people choose them carefully. Surely these companies know what's been said about them, wouldn't they prefer to silence these rumors outright if there wasn't some truth to them? You won't see negative factors announced anywhere, they aren't going to go "New PS4, social networking, 4k video, oh and you can't play used games on it!" That kind of thing only comes out after the initial sales.

But that's okay. The industry sees you as sheep. They expect you to run out and preorder everything. Their concern is marketing in advance, NOT giving you something you'll enjoy. So long as it's in your house, you'll use it eventually. Even if they break their word, it's still sitting there. Don't you want to play the new sequel to something that was good 10 years ago? It's a PS4 exclusive, because Sony gave EA/Acti what they wanted. You might have to pay to play, and you can't resell it. But you're going to buy it anyway.

[citation][nom]belardo[/nom]Buy the next Xbox? From the stupid company that gave us winRT which is useless. Win8 which is stupid and wp8 that few people buy? Microsoft has killed pc gaming... Don't reward them, buy the ps4.[/citation]

Also the same company that brought you Windows in general, and Windows 7 if you're being specific. Microsoft also created the PC gaming that you know. Get your head out of your ass long enough to not be ignorantly flaming on a company.

As a whole the console market has been hurt by tablets. So in order to remain relevant MS, Sony, and Nintendo need to keep up innovation to sway consumers to buy. So far I give the edge to MS only because of Kinect. In the near future more and more TVs become 'smart' that may cannibalize console sales since consumers use consoles as entertainment hubs. Then again Kinect with Netflix as mentioned is pretty cooL!

There you go.

Dude, do you REALLY believe that? Are you going to tell me that people - especially kids - want tablets for gaming these days over a console? Are you REALLY that stupid?

@yuke - so you link me two sites that clearly label the articles as rumors both having the exact same words as I stated "Always on, Always connected" as 100% proof that this is real and not some bullshit PR stunt? Even the Kotaku article specifically states "other sources familiar with the codenamed Durango console have told us that they are still unaware of any Microsoft plans regarding an online requirement."

Fail!

This "always connected" bs is what is forcing me to give up on consoles. I have never been very precise with a mouse, but I guess it's time to learn.

[citation][nom]Draeg[/nom]This "always connected" bs is what is forcing me to give up on consoles. I have never been very precise with a mouse, but I guess it's time to learn.[/citation] The nintendo Wii is "Always on, Always connected." After a few hours of hibernation the Wii enters a low power state and checks for updates, installs any if present then goes back into hibernation.

This is the exact same implementation Microsoft is applying to project Durango. The concept is that any game you have installed will automatically download updates for you so you don't have to run 250 mb of os patches, restart your xbox, then another 100mb of game updates before you can resume your game from last weekend. Whomever started this DRM rumor is retarded...

I can't find the exact article where a MS executive confirmed the "always online" requirement, to be honest, but you can downgrade the "confirmed" to "several sources from different sites state" kind of thing.

And learn to read the names you quote properly, dalethepcman; it's very rude when you don't.

Cheers!

Games/apps will reportedly suspend if connection is dropped for three minutes.

"Hot and Compelling?" More like a pain in the rear! This thing supposedly requires both internet connection and kinect to even function! So basically all the stars have to align just to get the thing to work. The only mildly interesting thing about the next xbox is the room illumination thing which we still know little to nothing about. Otherwise the PS4 wins in every other category imo.

At first Gamestop was bashing the XBOX 720 based on info that it was not backwards compatible with older titles. Now they like them? M$ must have cut them a check to be on their positive side PR.

[citation][nom]belardo[/nom]Microsoft has killed pc gaming... Don't reward them, buy the ps4.[/citation]
MS didn't kill PC gaming, game developers pandering to the console market have harmed the PC gaming market but it is doing just fine and dandy still anyway
...
Maybe if when they produce sales figures for games they included Steam or other download purchases, or those from Amazon, it would paint a more realistic picture - but you just go and shout at the moon - go blame MS for the rise in teen pregnancy or the Philpott house fire whilst you are at it

[citation][nom]npcomplete[/nom]http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013 [...] rruptions/Games/apps will reportedly suspend if connection is dropped for three minutes.[/citation]It never occured to you that maybe they were testing something like the new simcity, or diablo 3 which mimics this behaviour on the PC as well?

I suppose if you purchased world of warcraft, then got home and installed it then tried to play you would go all nuclear because it requires an internet connection, and if you turn off your internet the game crashes...

Yuka, Sorry for the Typo.

A tweet stating "Always on" as your proof that the xbox cannot play games if not online is not proof to anyone but you, its a fake story to create a headline to get clicks. You are still looking at this and seeing what you want to see.

I notice no one wanted to touch the fact that the Wii is "Always on." How about this then.

Do I think the Xbox 720 will have the ability to stop me from playing a game if you lose internet connection, yes

Does the playstation 2, 3, xbox, xbox 360, wii, wii-u have the ability to stop me from playing a game if I lose my internet connection, yes

Will any of these system ever be intentionally set to disallow you from playing all games if not online, no.

And thats the bottom line.

Kotaku has an interesting follow up on that issue, as well as the big deal with SimCity. It's a good read.

I am not in favor of Publishers screwing over regular people just because they have the upper hand with Console makers. We talk with our money and since I am against being FORCED to stop playing a game if my internet connection is not available, I plan to be very vocal about them trying to do exactly that. I have zero control on how my ISP works and MS+Publishers are putting ME on the bad end of the deal here. That's not an acceptable business model/practice IMO; it's actually very stupid since I am a customer that gives them my hard earned money for stuff. Also, I am in favor of protecting the industry from Piracy and stuff, but this is just plain stupid. Car makers don't tell you "hey, this car is for tarmac only, so if you go into gravel or snow, the engine will shut down until you put it back to tarmac".

Here's the Kotaku follow up: http://kotaku.com/microsoft-apologizes-for-employees-always-online-tweet-470911765

Cheers!

I live in a rural township just outside of a decent sized city.
My only choices for internet here are AT&T and Time Warner, and both suck.
Neither deliver anywhere near their promised speeds, neither can keep a constant connection on my phone or internet, and to get either to come out and fix something is along the rarity lines of hitting the lotto except a fix only lasts for a month tops (yup, keep cutting and splicing that cable, don't fix it!). Neither is interested in upgrading the cables outside of the house coming in, even though I've already rewired everything on the inside.
If MS decides they have to go always online to play, they just eliminated me from their target consumer bracket.
An Xbox isn't worth moving over and we all can't live in the city.
So for right now my plan is to stick with my pc, maybe go PS4 if they hold up.
Don't get me wrong, being soured on Xbox has a little more to do with than just a constantly online requirement. It has something to do with burning through 4 Xbox 360s while my original Xbox I got the day of the launch still works perfectly fine. I passed on the PS3 because of how many PS1 (3) and PS2 (3) units I had burn out on me.
