Gaming and p2p router setup and suggestions

I live in a house with seven other people, most of them have a laptop, a desktop, and a game console....I think there are up to 15 connections at any one time so the network can become very stressed and well most of teh people in the house obviously game and have large p2p use. Takign this innto consideration I just built my own desktop to replace my laptop and fidn gamign very slow my ping is usually pretty high, and even before that the network has to be consistantly reset due to large amount of torrent use clogging the router. I am looking for any suggestions on routers to buy to handle this situation in the 100-200 dollar range preferrably right at or below 150.
Would buying a router in this range even matter due to the high traffic? or would a commercial router have to be used to combat these issues? Is there certain things I can setup on my router to make it better, such as port fowarding? I know the router at my dads house has an option for gaming to make it the priority and so does the one here although it doesnt seem as well done? My issue with that is I know the range my games use but not the single port they use?

we are using a cable connection, with a lynksis router, modem and one other piece of equipment that I cant seem to place the word for right now for soem reason. any help would be awesome

Your ping is going to be limited by your internet connection. With all the P2P going on you will always have high pings. You can try running a gigabit router which will help internally but in the end your cable connection will be the limiting factor. Try to get the P2P limited to only after midnight.

thats what it just said, although normally it says around 200 or over ping, provider is comcast cable

We were having problems even getting a connection the last couple of days and just got it to work again, so I dont know if that has something to do with the faster speeds

everyone says they havent started torrenting yet, is there a way to check the network to see if people are indeed torrenting? if so I am sure i can convince people to set a time when to do it.

welcome to the hell of trying to play online games in a shared house.

the evil option is to take control of the router and set a ban list of ip's that cannot be accessed during certain times of the day (eg tracker.* *.tracker*)

however this wont stop people using the share peer option that most programs have, and there is always something new that everyone wants to download and it wont take long honest (im not bitter or anything)

your best option is to elect one person to handle all torrents on their machine and setup a shared folder to put all downloaded stuff in, its simple and avoids people downloading 5 copies of the latest episode, although explaining the beastiality torrent could be fun.

besides if 7 people are all downloading multiple torrents at the same time it will kill the router verrrrrry quickly and you will need to reset it all the time, which just gets annoying.

were going to try the one computer does the torrenting route, there is a computer in the hallway that goes unused until now, it used to be used by the house owner but he told us at the beg of the eyar he no longer needs use of it and we can use it if we need to
in the meantime we bought remote on off switches and placed them in a room that everyone can get to at all times, because before the router was in someones room and when he was gone for school and work it would mean the network could be down almost all day now that is solved

I reset the router yesterday and ever since then I seem to be getting much much better ping, although right now I am playing wolrd at war and there appears to be a million servers that I can now play but most of them are empty argh!!

before I did that I tried setting it so that my computer had priority over everyone else..evil I know but i just wanted to try to see the results and there didnt appear to be any...shouldnt this help a little?

I also wouldnt be surprised if the network in teh house isnt setup very effeciantly I will have to look at that later

My dad recently ordered fiber optic for my "real" house, he said they are backed up and can not install till end of feb but that its cheaper than the cable he is paying for right now so I am going to look into that as an option to talk about the landlord with as well

its the little things that will help, try getting everyone using firefox with adblockplus, avoid limewire like the plague, just set that torrent box to run after 1am and stop probably around 3pm when ya back from uni etc.

i do like the remote switches! brilliant idea to getting easy access to the router.
