Since recent games (example Battlefield 1) do not take advantage of multi threaded CPUs, isn't a higher base frequency 6700K (4 Hz) or 7700K (4.2 Hz) is going to outperform the Ryzen R7 1700 (3.0 Hz)?

Or, is the architecture of the Ryzen CPUs better and the 3.0Hz is going to outperform the 4.2Hz of 7700k?

Solution
Yes, probably. But you could say the same thing about the i7 6900k. The point being that you shouldn't be looking at 8 core/16 thread CPUs if all you're doing is gaming. AMD will be releasing 4C/8T CPUs later on, which will be the real competition to Intel's quad cores in terms of gaming performance and value.

Solution
Until we have actual benchmarks on the CPUs we can only sepculate based on diagrams and track record.

You are right that cores/threads are only useful if the application will use it, and that a 4ghz quad core is not necessarly faster then a 3ghz quad core depending on architecture. Hence why an i3-6100 can beat out an overclocked fx-8350 in most games.

I am very skeptical of Ryzen being superior to intel, but again that is pure speculation and no actual hard data to base that off of.
