Hey guys and gals,
I am trying to build myself a good gaming pc. I have a 64GB kit of ECC ddr4 memory that I pulled out of a workstation, so I would really like to use that since it is a $700+ kit of ram. My understanding is that only a few CPU lines have ECC support; AMD FX 8320, AMD Threadripper 1900X/1920X/1950X, a handful of Intel Celeron, and most of the i3, Pentium, Xeon E3 and Xeon E5 lines.
So I guess my two questions are:
Are these the only CPUs that support ECC registered/unbuffered? What is the best gaming CPU under $500 that supports ECC?

You'd be better off selling that ram on ebay and buying a gaming rig.

ECC ram is slower. Motherboards which support it are more costly. Limited CPU selection.

Your cheapest bet might be to find an older xenon, as they generally follow the same lines as the i7's.

ECC memory is only about 5% slower than unbuffered non ECC, which is completely unnoticeable when gaming. Thw limited number of CPUs available might be a problem, but like you said xeons generally follow the i7 lineup.
