Hi all.
I have a system which looks like this :
  • HP Compaq Elite 8300 CMT (Convertible Minitower)
  • 320 W proprietary power supply
  • Intel i5-3470, 3.2 GHz
  • 16 GB of RAM
  • 500 GB hard drive
  • optical drive
I would like to get a GPU for gaming. Something like a gtx 1050 ti or a gtx 1650. Maybe a gtx 1650 ti if i wait long enough. Anyway a GPU labeled with 75 W power consumption, not more (like this one: https://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-1050-ti/specifications). And more than that i would seek a GPU that is not overclocked and also without any additional power needed like 6 pin or so.

I was wondering whether upgrading my gpu to such thing would be a good idea or would damage my system in any way. Would the PSU be stressed by it so that in time would fail ? I did use an online power supply calculator and for my configuration i was recommended a psu with over 390 W. I'm confused. There are people that say they can run such GPUs even with 240 W (the HP 8300 SFF system) .

I know that there are ways to also upgrade the PSU with a standard one of higher power using some adapter cables, but i would rather not do that. I've read they are not 100% compatible and they can be risky to the system.

I have no idea how much power an HP Compaq Elite 8300 CMT would draw from those 320 W and how much room for a gaming GPU would there be left to spare. So i'm not sure whether the GPUs mentioned before would be recommended in my situation. Would you suggest something below the GTX 1050 ti in terms of wattage (lower than 75 W) ?

Any advice, tips or suggestions are welcome.

Thank you very much!
