Gaming Hard drive, SSD VS HARD DRIVE

Hello, Just a question, hopefully i can make this sound right haha .

So i have games installed in my normal hard drive.
my current Main drive is M.2 Drive, would there be any different if i game from M.2 to a normal drive? the loading times or speed of the game? or doesn't matter from what hard drive the game loads from?

Quick solution (although not basic to setup) if your Motherboard supports would be to get a $25 Optane M.2 and link with your HDD which will then perform close to your SSD performance.

So how does it work? do i connect it to my pc and for my Normal Hard drives, it would boost it up to almost SSD speed?

With the low relative cost of storage, I'd skip the hard drive and get an SSD.


The 500GB is $88 and the 1TB is $163.

Skip the M.2 SSD drive too. The performance increase is small and it is more expensive. Other than that it is an SSD.

Optane costs around $25 for a 16GB M.2 stick which when combined with a large HDD will come in at the same price for 4 times the space. Optane is new and hasnt been very well explained nor instructed on how to implement, especially when not used for a boot drive. If you know what your doing get a 4GB HDD and an Optane for under USD$200 and it will perform like an SSD.

The conclusion is to basically ship it and just get a regular SSD. Optane never really caught on.

If you can fit all your games and data on a 500GB SSD then go for it but i personally have over 4TB of games on my system + all the other apps !!!

The issue is with a ssd Drive, i live in australia, so the SSD 500gb WILL cost around 120 or 130.
and that would not be enough lol so why not get the 32gb Optane and have normal 5 tb hard drive and make it run like a ssd?

There are some disclaimers with "it runs like an SSD", the Optane will cache information regularly used from the Hard Drive so next time you use it it will be ready to load quicker (think web page on a larger scale), the more times you open a program using Optane the quicker it gets until you open around 4 times then its set at fast pace

The best of both worlds is to have your system drive on a 120- 250GB SSD and Hard drives for data.


I use a couple of SSD's and 1TB WD Black hard drive. It seems to work fine.

But with SSD so low in price (here anyway) , I would probably go with a 500 GB SSD now for a System drive.
