Gaming headset question

I've been looking for a good gaming headset. I've come to a roadblock because I have found people who use headsets and then I found people who say headsets are trash and to get a good pair of headphones and a desktop mic. What are your opinions? I would appreciate any help and recommendations. I have been looking at the Steelseries Siberia V2 headset. My price range is <$80-100.

i've always been using speakers (for years) until my first decent headset (because i was playing bf3, now bf4). it's worth it, desktop mic is just clutter for me, there lot's of good headsets out there. My next one will be wireless, less cables yey

If was to get a desktop mic I would probably set it off somewhere so it wouldn't be too much of a hassle, but I don't know if that is worth getting over a headset. For all I know it could be a bunch I audiophiles who turned me away from the siberia.
