Is it safe to game on a laptop whose lid is closed (external monitor)? The heat won't harm components, specifically the LCD?

Getting mixed results on Google, but seem more from cautious people rather than actual experiences. Apple seems to have an actual name for it (so safe) : "clamshell mode", must be the same on PC?

Laptops usually intake cool air or exhaust heat form the sides, the bottom or the back.
Closing the lid should not have a negative impact.
Which laptop model do you have?

The Asus Zephyrus 701 is in a design category by itself.
Since lifting the lid opens intake vents then it will have better cooling when the lid is open.

Asus created that to be able to cool components in a slim chasis design.
I suggest you leave the lid open on that one.
