Hey all,

I am currently upgrading my system and just want to ask that the hardware I choose to purchase very soon. Reason I want to upgrade is because when I want to play games like Arma 2/3 and Battle field 3, I tend to get rather low fps or very low fps (making some games unplayable) which is always frustrating.

my current specs;

CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 965 BE
MOBO: ASUS M4A78LT-M
RAM: Corsair Vengence 8GB (2x4GB)
GPU: nVidia GTX 460 v2 (1GB)
PSU: Corsair CX600
HDD: OCZ Vertex 4 128GB
HDD2: Seagate SATA II 300GB
Monitor: BenQ @ 1920x1080

I am currently only looking to upgrade my CPU and Motherboard first then upgrade my GPU after around September, Which i am looking at getting Nvidia 660ti 2gb.

I am looking at the Asus M5A99X Evo R2.0 as a motherboard upgrade (http://uk.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM3Plus/M5A99X_EVO_R20/#overview" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://) and the CPU upgrade will be a AMD FX 8350.

I will be using this machine mainly to play games such as Dota 2, Battle Field 3/4 and Arma 3 and for the use of USB 3 as I have some devices/case that use USB 3 and want to use them to full potential. I also do some programming development and sometimes have to virtualise linux distros when working. Edit, I do also like to dual screen and wich to be able to add a second 24" monitor which i would like to be able to use when gaming.

my budget is roughly 250£ just for the Motherboard and CPU. My question is that the upgrade items I have chosen are the best I can get for my buck from my current specs and will be future proof enough for the next few years.

Please feel free to ask me any questions i may have missed out on some information. I am open to alternatives such as Intel builds and other AMD builds.

Thanks in Advance

Hey Disco thanks for helping me just a quick question, also i forgot to add that im using a corsair h60 cpu cooler and im not planning to overclock. So is Intel more of a solid cpu than amd overall?

I would say that Intel is more of a solid CPU. Either CPU will be far faster for games.

If you are definitely not going to overclock then you could always get the i5 4670 from amazon for £174.94. That would save you £9.30 making the total cost for the first choice £280.83.

On the second choice you could get the i5 3570 from amazon for £162.96. That would save 7.98 making the total cost for the second choice £256.92.

Ok i have used Intel before and never could say anything bad about them 😛. the mother board you have suggested ticks all my boxs as i will be using a Corsair AIR540 case so be enough fan headers 😛. I kinda felt 8350 was abit OTT as i know i probally would never use all 8 cores and 4 cores is enough for me for what i need 😛.

I also found a comparison of the two cpu's; http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i5-4670K-vs-AMD-FX-8350

and comparing the 3570k with the 4670k there isnt that much different but seems the Haswell has larger power consumption.
