Hey Tom's Hardware,

This is something ive been debating between for a few weeks, and I haven't been able to find any viable proof or good explanations:

I'm about to build a new PC. Budget or value for the money is not a concern for this one. I want it to last, and I'm willing to spend top dollar. Its going to be used primarily for gaming and OC'ing.

Its primarily gonna be single-card, but two-way SLI is not entirely out of the question.

Would I see better performance on an X99 Chipset with the i7-5930X or on the Z97 Chipset with the i7-4790K?

Yes, but it would be tiny in most cases.
An x99 system will cost a lot more than a x97 system at this time, due to high ddr4 prices and whatnot.

In my opinion it's not worth the extra money unless you absolutely have nothing better to spend your money on.

But the extra money towards a fancy monitor or some high quality headphones.

As I said, value or cost isn't an issue at this point. I already have a pair of studio quality Sennheisers, and three 24" monitors, so that's all covered.

The 5930K is what I meant in the OP, it was a mistake to use the X suffix. My bad. lol
Im in Intel's Retail Edge, so I get the 4790K for $80 or the 5930K for $160. Thats why I dont care about price because the saving will cover all RAM costs.
I'm more worried about future compatibility and future performance rather than performance today, which is why I'm eying the X99 and its 40 PCI lanes. As I said, SLI isn't out of the question. It wont be immediately, but it could happen eventually.

I see, I thought you were thinking about paying 1000 usd or 300 usd for your cpu, but that explains it. :)

Just for the sake of being as future proof as possible, the 5930k would be a pretty solid choice, those extra pci-e lanes might come in handy in 5 years.

Alright guys. Thanks for clearing up the doubt in my mind. :)

Any suggestions on the best motherboard?
