Hey, my local computer shop is having a sale on RAM. Therefore i thought about upgrading from 8 to 16GB RAM.

My current RAM is Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz 8GB CL9
Kit w/2x 4GB XMS3 modules, CL9-9-9-24, 1.5V, Vengeance Heatspreader, 240
Should I buy another set of what I already have or is it outdated?

I'm considering to buy Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 2400MHz 16GB
2x8GB CL11 XMP 1,65V

Solution

If it was me, this would be the ram i'd grab. Gains in performance over ddr3 1866 are sketchy, mostly due to the reasons I highlighted above in that big quote. I recall in the most recent DDR3 ram speed test most high speed ram (ddr3 2400+) still falling behind a set of mushkin redline ddr3 1866 ram in real world ram speed test metrics.
what's your motherboard and cpu. some ddr3 capable cpus can't use ddr3 2400, many of them were released when ddr3 1600 was a common type.

just gotta make sure you can even use the faster ram.

as to the other question, about the 2nd set of corsair ram. unless it is the EXACT SAME product code I don't recomend buying a 2nd set of similar ram. there are many different timings, and just looking at another pair of ddr3 1600 with 9-9-9-24 timing, and the same heat spreader doesn't necessarily mean it's the exact same ram. The main goal is to never mix and match ram. (well this is much more important if you're overclocking, but still you can get stability issues even if you're not)

But is this a RAM I should choose or would you recommend other RAMs?

The shop also got Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 1866MHz 16GB
2x8GB CL9 XMP 1,5V, Red

This one is slightly more expensive. It got lower MHz, but it has CL9 instead of 11. is this better or worse?

My mobo is: ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VII FORMULA, S-1150
ATX, Z97, 4xDDR3, 3xPCIe-x16, SATA 6Gb/s, USB 3.0
My CPU is: Intel Core i7-4790K
Socket-LGA1150,Quad Core,4.0GHz,8MB,88W,22nm,HD4600,Boxed w/fan, Devil's Canyon

Does it work or do I need overclock or something?

as to your question about faster ram... this isn't 100% accurate but generally the easiest way to check is to take the CAS/MHZ of the ram, the lowest number is faster as it should represent the cycle time of the ram.

9/1600= 0.005625
11/1866=0.005895

in this case the ddr3 1600 with cas 9 is marginally faster then the ddr3 1866 ram.

you should be good up to whatever ddr3 speeds you want to get.

** as to why that isn't accurate, the IO bus speed different for certain ram speeds. between DDR3 1600/1866 it should be basically the same, so this "quick and dirty" forumul is mostly right. In reality if you want an accurate representation of the speed of the ram between different types of ram you should hunt down the IO Bus frequency for the different ram speeds.

FYI: this might be the single best explanation of ram speeds i've ever seen

Ok.

So which one of these should I go with?

1. Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 1866MHz 16GB
2x8GB CL9 XMP 1,5V, Red

2. Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 2400MHz 16GB
2x8GB CL11 XMP 1,65V

3. Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 1600MHz 16GB
2x8GB CL9 XMP 1,5V, Red

4. Corsair Dominator DDR3 1866MHz 16GB
Kit w/2x8GB XMS3 DHX, CL9-10-9-27, Platinum
