Typically, just after posting, I found the key...then I had to reboot the PC
as the mouse stopped responding so I'm hoping I saved it!

Much progress has been made but now I'd like a clue on how to find the key
to get in to the UltraViolet area at the top floor of the museum and a clue
on how to open the canal gate near the almost-underwater side entrance to
the Cathedral, please.

I need my real life back! I'm meant to be preparing my CV to get a new job!

Real life??? You have a real life??? I'd forgotten all about that. LOL!

The key to get into the vault at the top of the museum is really, really
hard to get. The patrolling lantern guard wears it and it's very difficult
to find a place where he won't see you before you can get close enough to
grab it. He won't react to you but if you have been in his line of sight in
the last 2 or 3 minutes, you won't be able to take the key. You can come
back later on (after the undead have taken over) and find it on his body but
there are other hazards in the Museum then. The best way I found to get it
from him was to lay in wait on the main floor, back far enough beside the
stairs towards the front door that he won't spot you when he walks down and
into the display rooms. If you moss the floor between the rug and the bottom
of the stairs, you can dash over and pick the key before he spots you.

Some of the canal gates only open on Normal, I believe, especially the last
one right by the Cathedral, at least from the outside. There may be a key
inside for it but I no longer can say for sure. Time to replay this one, I
guess, if I can only find time.
