[citation][nom]dainsane1[/nom]chrome may be a linux dress up. the interesting thing here is to have a marketing giant like google pushing a linux OS[/citation]

That was an attack?

Chrome OS will have it's position in the PC market, but it will not be a Windows Replacement. I see it as being very similar to the Linux OS's that are installed on Netbooks. Very dependent on the web and Google services. The only difference here is that it is being backed by a very big and wealthy company. I don't think Microsoft has anything to worry about at least in the near future. If the OS takes off and developers jump on board and make a library of programs and that can replace all of the programs on a Windows machine then Microsoft might have to worry.

I don' think they care much. Neither do I. I will never use Chrome. Google is just gathering data on everyone. If the EULA contains the same lingo as the browser then HELL NO will I EVER use it. My IP's are mine! (for those who dont know: the EULA in ther browser states taht Google gets a copy of, and rights to, anything posted thru their browser. Go read it.

Google has enough money to buy in support from 3th party dev's.
I am still amazed apple still doesnt fund EA in exchange for their games being able to run without DirectX and thus being portable to other platforms.

Hmm why don't they make their own os rather than repackaging linux for the billionth time? They have enough man power to handle it plus there are plenty of hobbyists finishing out their degree in colleges that know the ins and outs of hardware, I've met some people like that before. I also remember when some people in the emulation community were collaborating on making their own custom o/s, not linux based but from scratch. It can be done. Chrome doesn't interest me if it is just a repackaged linux all over again. I can find dozens of those to download.

what would be the better feat is if computers started shipping with chrome os as an option or by default. every computer you buy puts money in microsofts pocket. except those ubuntu machines from dell, but we need more choices

[citation][nom]brando56894[/nom]I guess you've never seen ReactOS its pretty much an open source clone of Windows XP but it's built entirely from scratch and doesn't use any Microsoft code. It's still in the Alpha stages though (0.3.10), even after a few years.[/citation]

Awesome! I had never heard of it either...really wish it was in beta so I could try it out...

As for Linux...the only reason I dont use it is because of driver support...its such a pain in the a$$ to get the right drivers and get them working properly...and thats something Microsoft is usually pretty good at doing...usually...lol

Even if they were worried about the new OS "competition", they'd be dumb to show it. Showing that they aren't concerned about it cutting into their market shows that they are confident in their product. I'd be amazed if they had any other reaction.

The OS is a browser. They are only using enough of the Linux kernel to start up the pc and launch the browser. All apps will be cloud apps running in the browser.

We'll have to see what they do with the OS. They can base it off Linux but not use KDE or Gnome. They can pull an Apple and make their own OS all together using aspects of Linux. I think Google knows their are hundreds of distros and even though some are easier than others none are as easy as Windows of Mac OS. Google knows if they want to make it, they have to make something thats nice, simple and powerful. I'm not saying its going to blow Windows out of the water, I doubt that. Windows still has backwards compatibility which no form of free OS is going to get companies to switch from Windows because most companies need programs that will not be on Google Chrome OS...same with gamers. I think Google OS can take some market share from Windows, but not much to scare Microsoft, now Mac OS and other Linux distros have something to be scared about. If this is good, I can see a lot of people...except true Apple fanboys/girls, leaving Mac OS for Google Chrome OS. People who are on the fence to either buy Mac or PC could switch to Google OS. But again we just have to see what they do with the OS.

For me there is nothing better than the flexibility of windows. Yes its not the best as far as efficient code but I will always go with the os that has the most support... If google can do that with Chrome then more power to them...Apple has not been able to do it...

Sweet!
Chrome runs great! Plus Google knows it will not take off unless it is more than just another linux distro...
The issue for gamers (more revenue than the movie industry) is that they will not migrate unless there is a way to game. Dual booting is cool but not practical.

Instead of making another Linux OS, or for that matter a Unix variant, I would love to see a from-scratch operating system that was radical and revolutionary, rather than an evolutionary step of a very old paradigm.

A whole new sytem based on the current trajectories of hardware and current generation of programmatic algorithms, bound not by the rules of the past, but by possibilities of the future.

Of course, this would take years, cost tens or hundreds of millions, and be obsolete several times over before it was commercially attractive. But hey, we're not going to travel to the stars by building better trucks.

[citation][nom]DiamondT[/nom]The issue for gamers (more revenue than the movie industry) is that they will not migrate unless there is a way to game. Dual booting is cool but not practical.[/citation]

The issue is also gaming performance: the lengths that gamers will go to in order to load a zone half a second faster, or to eek out 5 more frames per second is crazy. And, since every generation of game insists on looking better and more realistic than preceding generations, emulators and VMs will just not cut it.

[citation][nom]parsons68[/nom]Google is becoming Microsoft of the 90's...believing it's unbeatable in any market. One day, they'll wake up and realize people dislike them as much as they dislike(d) Microsoft...it's inevitable.[/citation]
Dude, I already hate them

Google needs to do two things to make this work.

1.) Make the OS easy to use for all the non-Linux lovers and older people (I'm talking my 60 year old mother here).
2.) Get developer and vendor support. I need to be able to go to the store and see packaged software being sold for it.

No, from what I understand OSX is based off of parts of Unix and BSD then customized even more to make it more "user friendly" and unique.

So you would rather go to a store and pay for software rather than download it (and possibly compile it) for free from the comfort of your own home? That sounds kind of dumb to me.

I'm glad someone finally mentioned this, it's not feasible if you want a good working OS within a relatively short amount of time. Granted google has the resources to make a new OS they just don't want to take the time and would rather build up from a stable framework. It's like if you're entering into a car race in 6 months do you build the entire car yourself (mold the chassis, make the glass for the windows, make the metal parts, etc..) or do you get an empty chassis and clean it up, buy the parts from a manufacturer and assemble it yourself?[citation]

It's usable but to what extent I don't really know. I just installed it in vmware earlier and it takes like 10-15 minutes to install since it's only about 40mb. I didn't really check it out other than a quick look around. According to their roadmap it will become beta in January and 0.4.0 which is due next month will be more usable than the current 0.3.10 and they're going to focus more on the UI..

Linux has great hardware support, 99% of the time I've never had a true problem that brought my computer to a standstill just problems with less common hardware such as the tv tuner card that I took from my dads dell. We got it in 2005 in his pc and apparently it's only sold in dell computers and no one really uses them in linux.

I DON`T CARE WHAT COMPONENTS WILL HAVE GOOGLE O.S., IF ITS AN HYBRID FROM UNIX, ORACLE,WINDOWS OR MAC, DON`T MATTER, ALL WHAT CONSUMERS WANT IS STABILITY, LOW PRICE, EASY ENVIRONMENT, GOOD PERFORMANCE (NO BUGS), EASY TO UNDERSTAND, AND OFF COURSE PRIVACY AND NICE LOOKING, GOOGLE HAS EVERY BUT NO PRIVACY, IF GOOGLE WARRANTY PRIVACY FOR USERS, GOOGLE HAS EVERYTHING TO MAKE A GOOD COMPETITION TO MICROSOFT, SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH, IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH YET,LOL.
