Gateway dx4870 reboot and select proper boot device

Hello,
I have been having a problem with my gateway dx4870 desktop computer. I keep on getting the message; "reboot and select proper boot device." I have done several things

1) Tried reinstalling my OS
2) Unplugging the power cord for 15 seconds
3) Going into BIOS (Delete Button) and having the HD DVD as first and Hard drive as second
4) Hitting F12 to select proper starting device.

After 30 minutes of messing with the computer, it will allow me back into windows 8

Don't know, I am lost now. Computer is less than five months old.

I'm not entirely sure but have you set boot drive priority?

Yes I have. I have set my HDD as first priority, then my CD/DVD. I have unplugged all devices during the reboot and will get the same message. After several attempts with the BIOS startup and priority screen, it will open up windows.

Sorry, I didn't notice you had already mentioned that in your initial post. Did you install Windows 8 yourself? If so there may be a incompatibility, but this I cannot guarantee.

I did download windows 8 myself, but installed the pre-installer guide to windows 8 and everything came out clear. Yeah, I was having the same problem even when I had windows 7. :-/

If you've had the device from new and it was under warranty you shouldn't have opened it. If you thought it was faulty you should have sent it to the manufacturer to test and repair (or replace if irreparable).

I think you should reset the BIOS settings to default (if you haven't already).

Very true, yeah I'll call gateway tomorrow. I guess I was trying my best to resolve my bios problem on my own. But I thank you for your time. Yeah, haven't found the answer on the Internet for the issue.
