Today, I found out what the "Home" button does... it launches a program called "SmartLauncher". I was also able to find a copy of the Creative X-Fi MB software to install. Apparently all of this is readily available from Gateway's support page but not listed under our system. So I guess that's that... everything is running like it was intended to. Thanks for contributing to my inquires.

At least you can remap the key through that program, so I choose to remap the home key to launch a small batch file converted to exe that hides everything on the screen - basically it hides the desktop icons, the taskbar, gadgets, and then it toggles the desktop. Couldn't really think of anything else to use it for... guess it will come in handy when I'm away from the computer or something...

k. Thanks for the info. I didn't have a clue what that was for. Was Playing with the Flash Drive last night, but I don't think things are right with the BiOS thing. I'm not sure if it will work and I'm not about to try booting to it. I did the Format / Bootdisk thing, and afterwards, there was nothing on the flash drive. The Total available space and Free space available were the same. When I checked, there was nothing on it. I did find the Boot Program had been put into something called CD-ROM. Just for kicks. I then Copy Pasted the BiOS Image and the Flash Utility onto the Flashdrive. I did order that 960 and it is due to arrive today.

Hi everyone! it's been a long time i visited this forum. i was editing some raw files and the i saw the memory used almost maxed out the 3gb of the stock ram. so i have some question here.
--will this memory's work on our fx6800-01e's?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231356&cm_re=12gb_ram-_-20-231-356-_-Product

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233146&cm_re=12gb_ram-_-20-233-146-_-Product

and if so, do i need to update my bios? i already updated on the first bios update from way back i believe from early 2009. i haven't done the second update which i will later tonight. my system is stock with only the new hdd replaced because the stock gateway has failed.

--what are the improvements with the new bios?

--Any more upgrades and updates i need to do?

Thank you very much.

Hi. Both will work, but will only run at 1066 Mhz as that is what it is locked to. There is no way to unlock it at present. Save some money and stay with the 1066 MHz stuff. Get a Tri Channel set of 6 Gb DDR3 1066 Mhz and you will be fine. The only way you will be able to increase the memory speed is by way of a Motherboard Change, that will have a unlocked BiOS. I haven't changed My signature yet, but I have upgraded to the i7 960 Processor and rolled back my ram to 1066 Mhz. Got rid of the Clunky Crucial Ballistix 1600 MHz I had in here as it was a drain on the system. It seems to do much better when you run the memory that was intended to be run.

thanks for the quick reply. i was thinking of getting the first one
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231356&cm_re=12gb_ram-_-20-231-356-_-Product&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-RSSDailyDeals-_-na-_-na&AID=10521304&PID=3463938&SID= as it is only 134 and it is already 12gb (4gb/stick), the same price as when i buy 6 sticks of 2gb x 6 (12gb set). And when if i need more memory in the future i don't have to replace the 2gb sticks if i do chose those.

Ami making any sense?

i can't seem to find a 1066mhz (4gb x 3 sets) other than those i linked.

thank you.

ican't seem to do the bios update. when i get to the command prompt it says can't find the path. it looks like this

C:\Users\theddy>CD C:\BIOS_842P181G
The system cannot find the path specified.

Please help. i still have the vista hp 64bit.

Thanks you very much

Yes this makes sence as the price is good, I have this exact memory in this gateway and it works great(but at 1066 speed) I have the 2nd BIOS... R01-B0 (05/19/2009)

I've also changed and added a HD, PSU(antec signature 650), GPU(5850... down in the 2nd slot away from the northbridge(makes a 10C difference), my northbridge is fanless @ 83C), memory(same 12Gb from Newegg) and case(HAF912 with 2x200mm fans one 120mm outtake and the back and one 120 intake on the side door) I've modded the original gateway case a ton but never liked the temps so finally got a new case and am super happy. Now if only I had the money for an Asus Rampage III 🙂 HD temps 20-22C, CPU 34C on original heatsink, GPU 46C

here's what it now looks like.... http://www.albertwint.com/gallery/view_photo.php?set_albumName=Art-statement&id=DSCF0589

Can't wait for it to arrive it's out for delivery. I'll be installing it right away. how is your system running with this sticks?

By the way i followed RW's intruction http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/267550-30-fx6800-bios-842p181g but i can't seem to update my bios. all instructions are followed carefully but when in command prompt all i got is this nothing happens.

C:\Users\theddy>CD C:\BIOS_842P181G
The system cannot find the path specified.

Can you help please. Anybody?

Thanks for this thread. Sorry for reviving the dead. I haven't read the whole thread.

Some time ago, the Seagate drive froze. We revived it by heroic measures (famous bad 7200.11 firmware). I'm not at all happy with Gateway and Seagate for not informing us. I had checked for bad firmware version but the Seagate checker (at that time) said all was OK; what they really meant "that drive is OEM and not our concern". Gateway was silent.

We just now did the newer BIOS update FX6800_BIOS_842P181G.zip. This used a GUI flasher (included in the .zip), not a batch file. We got the CMOS checksum problem. We cured it by flashing again, with more (all, essentially) options selected. Funny that loading default BIOS settings didn't fix it.

Although 16G is supposed to be the RAM limit, we just installed 6 x 4G DIMMs. Seems to work fine. Memory is so cheap now. We used too-fast RAM, but that seems fine. Inexpensive kits come in pairs so we bought three pairs to make two triples -- otherwise we'd have wasted a DIMM.
