my gateway 818gm has a rating of 1.0 what do i need to buy to upgrade it?

Looks like that's an AGP graphics based system. For the price a new AGP video card would be, you should look into upgrading the entire computer. You can get a much faster used dual-core computer for about $150-200 depending on how fast of a CPU and video card it comes with.
