Gathering everything but GPU, advisable?

I'm close to building my first gaming PC but rather than wait another month to have enough to buy all the pieces at once would I be able to buy everything EXCEPT the graphic card and still have a functioning PC I can use for watching movies and internet browsing? There are no "must play" games for me at the moment but my present computer is 10 years old and I'd like the basic functionality in the mean time. Is it possible?

Yes, absolutely, depending on what CPU you are thinking of getting. All Intel processors have built-in graphics, which would be far better than anything on your current 10 year old computer. If you were to go with AMD, some of their CPUs are actually APUs, which have quite powerful graphics built-in, but you would only go for these if you didn't want to add a more powerful graphics card later.

That's great to hear! Before I pull the trigger, is there any chance the list can be looked over to be certain everything looks good together? Here it is:

Yeah, I have to agree on the SSD. There isn't much advantage with the M.2 slot vs SATA 3.0 and that's a lot to pay for only 256GB. Also you would want more storage than that, modern games are huge, GTA V is something like 60GB. So get a standard SSD for your OS and those programs you use often, then get a large HDD for everything else.

I was looking at that motherboard to see what outputs it uses to connect to a monitor. Looks like it is display port and HDMI. If you don't have a newish monitor, you will need to get an adaptor (or a cord with 2 different ends) to connect the motherboard output to the DVI plug on your monitor (assuming that's what it's got).

Sorry, I should have mentioned I'll have a separate HDD as well(likely external in case I ever have to take the PC in for servicing) but didn't list it because I figured compatibility is easy to figure out for that piece. The primary is for the OS with games going on the secondary :)

Good call on the cooler, I'll change to the one suggested. What do you think about the Samsung 850 EVO 250GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-75E250B/AM) http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OAJ412U/?tag=georiot-pcg-20&ascsubtag=hawk-616837152-20 ? Half the price but still seems like it'll be capable of transferring information quickly.

Good call on the adapter; I plan on getting an ultra-wide display but that'll be a 4-5 months down the road so I'll need something to connect the old monitor.

Thanks for the tips guys, can't wait to get it all together!

Yes that is a much more sensible choice of SSD. I have a similar speed drive and the speed at which it loads the OS is incredible, almost half my boot time is the initial boot screen.....which isn't very long 🙂

Another question I'm uncertain as to the answer, would a Intel Core i5-6600K 6M Skylake Quad-Core 3.5 GHz LGA 1151 95W BX80662I56600K Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 530 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117561&ignorebbr=1 be a noticeable difference in performance from the 6700k? The 6700k seems to be sold out just about everywhere and the few places that have it want upwards to $500 which seems way overpriced. From what I've read it seems most games are more GPU intensive than CPU intensive. Thoughts?

Very interesting. After seeing that I'm actually leaning in the direction of the I5...Given that I'm used to console gaming I have to imagine that even not overclocked I'd likely still get a better experience(or at least one on par with consoles) than what I'm used to. I'll also have to keep in mind that I'll have to select settings carefully(like not needing to see far off in the distance and instead focusing on the immediate surroundings or dropping down in detail on RTS games) The fact that I can save roughly half the original expected cost is just gravy. The one thing I should probably consider very carefully though is if I want to play a game on one part of the screen while having a movie playing in another(still looking into if that's possible or if games take over the whole screen as I suspect)

Great information and I appreciate your time in responding. It's always great to hear from people who are willing to help.

The next thing I'm looking at is the OS. I'm reading complications with compatibility with games and drivers...should this be worrisome? Should I go with Windows 8 instead of 10? I've also read there are loads of privacy issues(not all that surprising given how Gates affiliations). It i7 can be found at a decent price with the combo mobo SuperCombo Upgrade Pack: Intel Core i7-6700K 8M Skylake Quad-Core 4.0GHz CPU + MSI Z170A GAMING M7 MOBO + CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 Memory so I'm looking at that instead of the HERO possibly.

I would go with windows 10 and I am quite happy with it and there is always direct x12 which should be interesting as for "complications with compatibility with games and drivers" I would not be worried too much all of my old stuff works on win10 and I have 214 games in steam on it own more in other places the motherboard looks very nice and two 8 sticks of ram is the way too go
