Machine runs fine for days and weeks. Only when I cold reboot after being switched off for a couple of hours it boots into firmware. After that I can save and reboot and the machine goes on its marry way without a hickup.

What could cause the machine go into firmware after being switched off for some time?

Probably storage doesn't get detected fast enough for boot into OS.
Disable fast boot in BIOS.

May also want to disable hibernation in windows. This also disables hybrid sleep.
From elevated command prompt execute:
powercfg /h off

Storage is a RAID set, after installation I automatically switch off hibernate. But both are good suggestions.

I will try without Ultra-Fast-Boot.
