Hi all!
Been searching all over the internet for a while now, and i just have to nicely ask here if someone can be so kind and help me?

I am pretty sure my old GeForce 8800 GTX card have made its final impact on my 8 year old computer. So i was wondering what kind of alternative/replacement graphics card there is and my computer spec?
I do not have the biggest budget to spend, but I just want my computer back up with a similar graphics card to play my usual games like CS GO :) Budget I thought of was from 120 - 200 $.

My current computer spec:
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-N650SLI-DS4L nForce-65 ATX , Socket-775, GbLAN, 2xPCI-Ex16
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz Socket 6MB, BOXED, 1333Mhz
FORMER Graphicscard: Club3D Geforce 8800GTX 768MB PCIe 384BIT,GDDR3, Dual DVI, TV-out
Memory: Corsair TWIN2X 6400 DDR2, 2048MB Kit w/two matched CM2X1024A-6400

Not sure if that is all needed to find a new one for my computer, but i would really appreciate any help or tips to make my old computer back working again.

Tnx!

Solution

that's sadly the only kicker. no one knows yet. but mid month is what is expected. another week to 10 days. if you need it now, then obviously something that already is for sale is needed. give me a few to look at the psu specs to see what it can handle

A 960 would be a total waste on that CPU. Match it as opposed to over-matching it. A 950 would be barely fair. A 750 Ti will swamp that CPU with SOME games. But for the average it will work. So would a 7870-= R9 270 , etc...

never seen any benchmarks that show what you are saying. true the cpu is weak but that does not mean it can't handle a decent budget gpu. i'm sure it will take a small fps hit but not enough to worry about.

note i did link 750ti cards as well as 950 and 960 ones. lots of options at a variety of prices. i'm confident in whatever card he chooses.

Thanks alot! This will help me a great deal to decide what I end up and buy.
Cause I might end up spending abit more then to afford the 950s or the 960s perhaps. If i can make my budget to accept that :) But with the 950s and 960s would i have to upgrade something on my computer, or can I just plug and "play" as with the 750TI ?

Price is correct. 1690 NOK for the gtx 960 at a cheaper store :)

Very kind of you Mark RM, I will ofc let you know if that is the option i choose. But I think my best option is to buy a new graphicscard.

the last store had much better prices so those are the best deals. you'd not have to do anything different for a better card. just drop in and install new drivers and it'll be good to go.

if you go much more though, then the cpu will be an issue unless you update that as well like already suggested. but a real good gpu can be moved to the next build next year and still be worth using. that's really the only reason to go for more gpu at the moment is if you plan on moving it to a new build later.

they do have the xfx 480 which is the new card and would easily move to a new system next year. 3.000 though https://www.komplett.no/product/893536/datautstyr/skjermkort/pci-express/xfx-radeon-rx-480 would be way overkill for your cpu but i'm thinking of adding one to my q6600 system. should be ok paired with that cpu.

again got proof to this? cause it is just not true. as i said, it is true it would do better with a better cpu but it won't choke out and refuse to work with the one he has or a cheap q6600 or q9550 upgrade. you're being dramatic to make a point that is not really true.

It certainly is true, a 960 is a bit too much for this generation CPU. You haven't done your homework and want me to do it for you. A 950 will fit some/majority games. and a 960 will encounter bottlenecks everywhere. Given a standard 1080 P resolution, why would spend more money for nothing? Do you fill up your Honda Civic with Premium gas?

Get real.

Yup, that site is the cheapest one, so I think my current thought is to buy 750 TI from that site, and just keep it as original as is has been these 8 years. And from all the great recommendations i've recieved I think that is the best option for my computer, and then i can reinvest in a new computer further down the road :)

Anyways thanks alot for your help Math Geek, you have no idea how i appreciate it :)

I really appreciate all your suggestions and thoughts guys! Have made me deciding what to do alot easier, and I will think about it for a few more hours, but i think i will end up with the 750 TI card.

Again thanks alot for the answers and tips! I will let you guys know what I decided, and will try and report how the computer responds 😀

That computer is cool as is, keep your old os and saved games. Keep it and go with a new build, no parts are worth reusing from this build. You could improve it by chancing it on a used 771 cpu modded for 775 or buying a mod sticker and xeon cpu. A fast quad core xeon with a 8800GTX would be really cool.

look on ebay and amazon

Great suggestion there, I might end up keeping the computer as original as i had it when i first built it many years ago.
Thanks for all the tips, I will be sure to try your suggestions when I can afford a new pc :)

(These pad mods are mostly so you can overclock on locked oem boards)(Celeron E1200 1.6ghz@2.66ghz on a oem hp-compaq, it's still slow but better than it was, it's one of the computers at work so they are happy with the speed increase) (A tiny piece of black electrical tape was put over BSEL2 and it changes the cpu from 800fsb to 1333fsb.)

This will be my subtle contribution to this thread.
THE BOTTLENECK IS REAL.
In my old rig i could play Black ops 3 1080p medium high settings with a i3-550 at 60fps with my 750Ti.
In my new rig with a 6700K same settings and same 750Ti I get 90+Fps. That allows me now to play with very high settings at 60fps. (Untill I buy my gtx1070)
I guess thst says it.
