GeForce4 Ti4200

I've been shopping around, and I've decided to buy a GeForce4 Ti4200. I'm trying to decide which ram to get.

Is 128MB ram overkill, or will it really help out with high resolution gaming (1280x1024, etc)?

Also, is the speed difference mentioned below (from the sticky buying guide) going to be a major difference, or a miniscule one? I was planning to get the middle one, but if it will be A LOT slower, I don't want to get it. But I couldn't get the third variety cheap.

Comments: There are three types of Ti4200
Ti4200 64mb 4x/8x- cheapest, second fastest(clocked higher), better quality ram
Ti4200 128mb- slowest out of the three, said to have cheap ram to reduce cost(clocked lower)
Ti4200-8x 128mb- 8X AGP, slightly faster than Ti4200 64 MB, uses good ram

You might get lucky and be able to overclock the slower one (in your link) to 500MHz on the memory (and a bit on the core as well) so it won't perform that much slower than the other two at stock. I have the faster 128MB one and it overclocks nicely (300/600)....Newer games at higer resolutions are going to need the extra memory, but keep in mind that the very newest games won't run well on at Ti4200 at high resolutions anyways...I guess it comes down to how much you want to spend.

GameVE has a Gainward 64MB 8X one with TV/DVI for $85. With about a dozen orders they have proved to be a trustworthy, quick shipping company. Never RMA'd with them though. From doing some testing on a KT400,XP2100+ system, I found 6 Ti4200's to vary up to 550 3DMarks in 3dmark2001se. The Fastest was a Gainward 128MB 8X, but all the 4X 64MB cards could break 11K on that system without OC. My 1 Gainward 4X 128MB card had the slower memory and couldn't quite hit 10,700. As far as games, it only seemed to be 1-3fps lower using fraps. Not really a huge differnece. If it is all you can get fine, but otherwise look in this order 8X 128MB, 8X 64MB, 4X 64MB, and lower than these the 4X 128MB. True the extra memory might help in some games. In reality with Ti4200's running default speeds, I haven't seen much of a difference except in 3dmarks. The 128MB 4X might not be able to OC to the 8X memory speeds, but the 64MB ones and 8X128MB ones usually go far beyond that.

128 megs will be useful in newer games, which have high-resolution texture sets.

If you have a 64 meg card those games will still work, but you won't have an option of using the high res textures.

How major of a difference between the 128MB and the -8x 128MB?

I want to buy that package because it comes with dvd software... what % difference, and clock speed difference?

Almost a total zero difference.

8x AGP on a Geforce4 Ti4200 is a marketing feature and makes no perceptible difference in actual use.

No difference that a human being could percieve, anyway.

There's a clock speed difference in the RAM too on the 8x...typically an extra 12 MHz, translating into about 0-1% added performance, IIRC...nothing worth noting.

Maxtor disgraces the six letters that make Matrox.

Actually the difference between the AGP4X one and the AGP8X one is 68MHz (512 vs. 444)on the memory speed at stock. More than 12, but still not major. However, the max overclock (if you are into that kind of thing) will be higher with the AGP8X one...

Well, I had a GeForce 4 Ti4200 with AGP4x and that card went bad. I got a replacement card with AGP 8x and my stock score went from 10,300 to 11,100. So in benchmarks, I noticed a difference with AGP 8x, but in games there is no difference. I have the 64 MB version. I got 12,769 when overclocked to 300/600.
