Good morning, I am at a crossroads. I have the x570 tomahawk as my MB and I am trying to decided between several options for storage.

I was thinking of the following scenarios:

2 PCIE Gen 4 SSD's either the SN850 or 980 Pro, I was going to do a 500gb for a boot drive and applications and a 1tb for Games

1 Gen 3 SSD as a boot drive 500gb, more than likely the SN750 and then a 1tb Gen 4, probably the SN850

2 Gen 3 SSD 1 500gb as the boot drive and a 1tb storage drive both the SN750s

Money is not super a concern it is, but the Gen 3s we are seeing great results right now while we are just scratching the surface of the Gen 4's. I will primarily be doing gaming, but I also do a lot of productivity type things too.

Just looking for opinions or other recommendations!

Solution
For gaming, I would do a PCI-E 4.0 drive for your OS, and 3.0 for your games storage. Games really aren't quite yet taking advantage of SSD speeds faster than those of high end SATA ssd's, much less NVME. I am sure there is probably some exceptions, but in general that is the case. 4.0 will possibly be useful for productivity if you are going to be working with large files, otherwise, I would just stay with 3.0.

Unless you are doing something that specifically benefits from very fast storage I highly doubt you would notice any difference. A lot of people would not tell the difference between a good SATA drive or high end NVMe. It was non scientific but LTT did a blind test with their staff and the outcome was they just couldn’t tell between a SATA drive and top end NVMe 4.0 for gaming and generally tasks.

I am kind of leaning towards just sticking to Gen 3 for now to shave some money off the build and currently the SN750s are on sale everywhere so it is a good time to grab some.

This is my first build since 2011 so I am walking into a whole new world.
