For your information, there are actually four new groups:

rec.photo.digital.point+shoot
rec.photo.digital.rangefinder
rec.photo.digital.slr-systems
rec.photo.digital.zlr

If you're not familiar with the term, ZLR is Zoom Lens Reflex. This was
the best compromise to describe high-end cameras that don't have
interchangeable lenses, but otherwise look like SLRs - such as the
Panasonic FZ20, Minolta A2, Nikon 8400 & 8800 etc.

If you can stand a web based board like dpreview which has got to be
one of the worst web based interfaces I have encountered, more power to
you. I prefer Usenet. The new newsgroup, rec.photo.digital.slr-sytems
has been coming along nicely. Since you don't see the need for it, just
ignore the DSLR newsgroup, nobody is forcing anyone to use it. I almost
wish Alan would stop touting the new group for fear it would start
becoming like r.p.d.

Yeah, it's really terrible the way that USENET is divided up. What a
drag it is, having to separate the photographic posts from the java
language, gardening and travel ones. And as for having to go all the
way over to a sports group to discuss football - I ask you, why on
earth bother going to a sports group to discuss sport? So much more
fun just to have a single newsgroup in one's subscription list and put
all the posts in there.

Nor is the intent of an NG to help people learn every general function of a
specific camera. I understand when people question something like metering, or
why files come out a certain size in a given mode, as these are sometimes
difficult to interpret even with the manual. But the question that you're
referring to was something that can only be answered by somebody delving into
the manual for that specific camera. It might was well be the person with the
camera and the manual. The manual for the camera in question is available
online from the manufacturer.

1/4 or more of the threads here regard DSLR specifics. So why should people
wade through 9,000 unrelated posts to get to it? That was the primary reason
that the NG was proposed. Second to that was a desire to create an NG similar
in nature to rpe35mm, but without the film issues. And there it is.

As to dpreview, which is an excellent information source, it is a poor
discussion place IMO (an opinion I hold of almost all web based discussion
boards, although they have been getting a little better of late).

My more enthusiastic side sees me posting a "C'mon on over!" post here daily.

Out of respect for everyone concerned I've held it to, I believe, 3 posts to
date since late October. This latest one followed the collection of the Dec.
statistics as showing clear, healthy growth.

We may not need ever again to advertise the success of the group, but I will try
hold off longer next time.

And by the way, as others have pointed out in various ways, rpd will still be
here, will still be healthy and strong.

I take it you are one of the anal types who thinks that the world needs a
rec.photo.zlr and a rec.photo.rangefinder etc etc etc group. Go back to your
double entry bookkeeping. Most of the world is looking for people who can
help them, not people who are so busy sorting they can't be bothered with
newcomers. I'm very surprised you morons didnt create twice as many groups,
a full set for beginners, then a full set for advanged users, then groups
for people who own both slr and p&s, and a group for people with Canon slr
and Nikon p&s and a group for.... I think I'll stop now, I might be giving
you gobshites more ideas.

? If you mean your news reader did that, then yes, that's how it's supposed to
work. The 'subscription' is all in your newsreader, not "on the web/internet".
The download refers to a list of messages (some nominal number or the maximum
that your new server 'sees').

It just makes SENSE (at least, to me) that, if the traffic volume in a
newsgroup exceeds X, a more SPECIFIC "spin-off" group should be formed and
used.

I first "heard" about the

<news:rec.photo.digital.slr-sytems>

group somewhat more than a week ago.

My Cox Communications news server did NOT carry it. I logged-on their support
site and left email requesting it.

It is now on the server.

That's good service.
