[citation][nom]assasin32[/nom]Not that long on facebook because I imagine most of us have a hatred for facebook and/or refuse to "like" things to just get a beta key or something. Unfortunately for a tech website a bad move on there part if they actually wanted to get rid of all the keys, appreciate the offer though just wrong way to go about it for your customer base. The way most of us would have prefered I imagine would be a sign up page on Toms in which the individual key was displayed or automatically sent to us after signing up. A bit more complicated than how facebook is setup I imagine but that's what happens when your dealing your current customer base, most of us have a general hatred for a few things and facebook is one of them.[/citation]
but youre missing out that this is also a move to advertise THG. theres arguably no better way to advertise this site than through facebook. this isnt just for the current user base. It also helps get more people interested in IT/pc stuff. When new guys click on a link to THG and see all these interesting articles and reviews on the organized THG page, they might stick to it. I myself got interested in pc stuff because of a THG giveaway I saw advertized on another site 5-6 years ago.

this kind of advertising is necesary for a site to grow. facebook reaches farther out than a regular THG article giveaway.

Wow.. everyone needs to lighten up on jphish. Its not like the front page of toms is covered with a full screen popup prompting you to "like" toms hardware facebook page before you can view articles. He doesn't make the rules, he just works here. If you don't want to sign up via facebook, then don't. Its a free country.

If you want to get a beta key from tom's, then follow the simple directions. If you don't like it, its all fine to voice your opinion, but ragging on the admin's for doing their jobs doesn't help anyone.

As a side note, I still thankful for the google docs signup for the system builder giveaways. I haven't won any of them, but one can dream... :)

[citation][nom]jpishgar[/nom]It's remotely possible, sure, but monstrously inefficient. We have 2,000 keys to give away. We can do it automatically through a Facebook tab, or allocate a number of them for the stalwart holdouts to be distributed manually via private message.I suppose I could ask if we could set aside a dozen or two for the inevitable Facebook adverse. I can look into seeing if I can draft a mod to help out with this effort, if it's possible. As an aside, you guys should know that we aren't mining your personal data through Facebook. We aren't teamed up with Facebook, or in cahoots with them to sell your grocery shopping habits to Belgian root beer manufacturers. It's an efficiency thing.[/citation]

Perhaps, but partnering with Facebook damages your reputation among those who are familiar with Facebook's practices.

It's all a calculated risk. If Tom's marketing strategies gains them 1.5 new readers for every 1 current that leaves, they're still better off. Do you honestly think you're irreplaceable?

It's funny how my local grocery store, a company that sells food, has sweepstakes on Facebook, a website, and people are totally happy with it. Yet Tom's Hardware, an IT company, gives away keys on Facebook and people are screaming murder.

Speaking of irony, I'm happy with my Facebook account, but I don't want to try the beta!

Seems to me there have been large Beta Key give aways long before facebook existed. They managed it, so can you. I'm certain there are plenty of webapps you can integrate directly into your CMS to handle this very task. Isn't that what you pay your website programmers for?

It's funny, you act like "facebook adverse" is a bad thing. Who's drinking the kool-aid now? So *many* people use it for the sole fact that their friends use it. Bunch of damned sheep if you ask me.

Hmm... that's pretty much the essence of social networking.
