I recently bought a monitor that has a 120hz refresh rate. My laptop does not have a DVI port but it does have an HDMI and mini DisplayPort. The monitor does not have a DP and Im unsure if my laptop's HDMI port is a 2.0.
In stead of buying a $100 mini DP to active DVI, could I use an HDMI 2.0 cable with a mini DP adapter and still get 120hz? And if so do I need a special kind of adapter or would a $10 one from amazon be sufficient?

Solution
to be safe, make sure the adapter says 4k compatible. the included mini dp to hdmi adapter that came with my 295x2 maxed out at 1080p (cant remember what hz).

i bought the 4k version of cable matters brand from amazon for $13 (cable matters has a 1080p version for $10).

i dont think it matters, but i use a monster hdmi cable (i know overpriced), but its also rated at 28gbps.

i know for 4k 60hz you need a cable rated at a minimum of 18Gbps. but i think you will be fine with a standard "high speed" rated hdmi cable which have a rating of 10Gbps.

so with a 295x2, cable matters 4k mini dp/hdmi adapter and monster hdmi cable i get 1080p 120z from my computer to a vizio 4k p652.
What laptop and monitor? And you don't need HDMI 2.0 to get 120hz at 1080p, HDMI 1.3 or whatever will do. My TV does 120hz (yes real 120hz, not some phony fast pixel motion crap) and I only have a 7870 GPU that's HDMI 1.3 and just player BF4 an hour ago at 120fps with it.
