I made a thread on here yesterday explaining the unique situation I was in. I need to house a computer in a boiler room because it's the only door that can be locked off. Its purpose is to run a program that controls security functions at my bosses business. Essentially it will just sit there running a couple programs 24/7. I was told I was basically fighting a losing battle no matter what I did with any kind of normal computer build so I was then recommended these mini PCs, such as this (apparently these can be a pretty penny but I was linked this for one on the cheaper side) http://www.mini-box.com/SYS-M350-AsRock-Q1900-ITX-M3-ATX?sc=8&category=1543 as apparently they are good for rugged and harsh enviornments. I think we will give this route a shot. My question to anybody who may know a thing or two about these things is, what unit do you recommend I use on a budget, and what unit do you recommend if money isnt an issue? And then maybe somewhere inbetween.

I configured the one I linked above to how I would likely order it.

When this thing comes in, Ill have a computer that runs and works like any other PC? And I think I understand how this will work. Because there is so little power surging through it, essentially less energy, less heat. I think the whole unit itself is like 95watts total. The way I see it, the lower the wattage number, the more it has in common with a literal rock. A rock wouldnt have a problem in a boiler room. :)

Thanks for any advice!

edit - Windows 7 still okay to use or obsolete too soon? Also, does it even matter given the computers purpose? thanks.

I'm sure I could find some suitable rocks, which I could then hang some high prices off of... 😛

Seriously though, at long as the humidity in that room is not high, I see no reason it wouldn't work. Just need a power outlet to plug this into.

Windows 7 should be fine. But, the default memory for that unit is 2GB. Windows 7 will eat 1GB, and maybe a bit more. I would go for the 4GB memory option. I know nothing about the software you intend to run, or how much memory it needs, so find out how much memory it needs.

Windows 7 mainstream support ended January 13, 2015. Extended support will end January 14, 2020. After that, you are on your own. Consumers will get free upgrades to Windows 10, but not businesses.
Also, I live near Boston and its basically the summer time that is the issue. otherwise, during the month of May where so far its been only slightly hot, the PC in there now gets up to 50c. In July it will be trouble.
