Question Getting higher than average temps on my 7800X3D ?

Hey there,

I recently bought a new system from an acquaintance, that was built 2 months ago. It's got a 7800X3D with a CM ML240 Illusion AIO inside a Cooler Master TD500 Mesh V2 case (3xCF120 + 3xMF120 Halo ARGB 120mm fans). All in all the PC runs flawlessly and there is a severe improvement over my previous 9700k, but after a while I noticed something odd:

The fans would randomly speed up for a little bit while just having my browser open and the 7800X3D goes from 48-50c at idle, to up to 55-60c. What is weird is that It's also been hitting around 65-72c while gaming which seems fine. Still the whole thing seems unusual considering that one of the top things I've heard about this CPU (which is my first experience with AMD CPUs) is how cool it runs and from what I've seen people tend to get around 40c when idle with air cooling.

This leads to me believing that something is wrong with the temps I've been getting. The AIO is mounted correctly, with the radiator at the top. I'm running a 3080ti which does get rather hot but this whole thing is happening while the GPU isn't during any load, so it shouldn't impact the temps.

What could possibly lead to such a rapid jump in temperatures while idling and having such little difference between idle and heavy load? I haven't fiddled with the BIOS a whole lot, but I made sure the MSI game boost is off. I also haven't done any manual fan adjustments, though I think that I might need to do so.

Unsure what is going on so any advice is appreciated.

Make and model of your motherboard and it's BIOS version? Out of curiosity, did you recycle the older platform's OS drive and OS install?
No, I've only kept a NVMe that was used for games (so no OS) and the 3080ti from my old PC.

The motherboard is MSI B650 Tomahawk which should be at one of the latest BIOS versions.

Was away from the PC for a while, but I fiddled with a custom fan-curve and still nothing. Temps are still spiking up to +70c randomly when idle. Got some MX-6 and I plan on repasting it one of these days (unfortunately I now need the PC for work).

Was wondering whether anything else could be the culprit ? I'll report back once I repaste it but I'd love to hear more opinions on what could cause this. I personally don't think anything other than the pump being faulty/thermal paste not being applied correctly could be at fault.

Just repasted the CPU - applied just the way I should but I'm still getting ridiculous temps. Hits 87 during heavy load. The AIO pump seems to work fine at the right RPM it should so I'm completely at a loss.
