getting into 4k gaming

My son has an older PC with the following components:
ASRock P67 EXTREME4 GEN3 LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000)

He was looking to get an Nvidia GTX 180; but would his current PC run it? Or am i looking at getting him a whole new build?

Im pretty sure that the pc would be able to hold a gtx 1080 (I'm pretty sure you didn't mean 180), but the cpu would bottleneck the 1080 in cpu intensive games. As shown in this https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/17VRKPjyiTBx9Ewc2xkmaMZD2tA3gSOG3rNtH4OEiz3g/edit#gid=0 the cpu has a blue so it would semi-bottleneck the 1080 in cpu demanding games, everything else should be fine.

most games are not very playable in 4k even with a gtx 1080

I suggest a 1440p monitor with a gtx 1070
