I have 3 smart TVs, 1 laptop, 2 EBox T8V version 5 streaming boxes and 2 iPhones. I want to use my new ASUS RT-AC87U router when I have Spectrum install WiFi service. Should I use the modem provided by Spectrum ISP? Do I even need a modem with the ASUS RT-AC87U? Should I purchase a more capable modem to compliment my high speed router?

Solution
A lot of people buy their own modem to avoid monthly rental fees. If you are going to use your own router you want just a modem not a modem/router. You do not want to have 2 routers in the path if you can avoid it.

The modem only options that spectrum provides are going to be the same performance wise as the ones you can buy. Most ISP have a limited list of modems they will support and unlike routers there are not a lot of brands of modems. Mostly this is going to be a money thing. It depends on the costs of the modem, I have seen some packages from some cable providers that include the basic modem as part of the service.
Don't use the wifi. I wouldn't even pay for it, you don't need wifi provided by charter. Use the modem they give you, but hard wire it over lan directly to your own wireless router, and connect to it instead. It will do all the heavy lifting.

I also have spectrum, and the modem they provide does the job, but only if you use your own router in front of it. It's an underpowered black box but if it only has to deal with 1 lan connection, it's good enough.

I only need to give the modem a reboot about once every 3-6 months. It is so rare it is the problem, it is the last thing I do.
