I'm putting together a pc for my friends kid and, i tried my luck with a cheap 1080 at a local flea market.
It gave no signal on a ga-z97-hd3 pcie gen3 mobo with xeon, but did on an i7 960 workstation. It installed drivers with no problem, though i haven't tried any games yet.I have also tried pcie gen2 and gen 1. I even tried h81 mobo and it also gave no signal.
Any advice is appreciated...

What gpu is that? Does it also work in the second pcie slot? Reason im asking is im hoping it works immediately because i read on Gigabyte specs page when using second pcie slot with 8x or higher card bios pch (chipset) pcie express lanes is set to 4x, not sure if need to do this prior to installing a graphics card there. If it works straight off, then try the 1080 there. The reason im also suggesting this is to rule out differences in video cable positioning (for both cards) at the rear of the card. Case may impede video cable connection depending how close the ports are to any bulge from the case, second pcie slot wouldn't have such bulge.

What video cable is used? Yeah, check video cable connection isn't rubbing up against case.
