Gigabyte R9 280 needs more power?

Hey guys,

So I bought a Gigabyte R9 280 which on the box says I need a minimum of 600W power supply. I currently have the Antec HCG 520M power supply.

I was wondering if this was safe? PCPartPicker said my CPU build was sub 400 (378W) so I always thought the 520W power supply would be fine?

Thanks!

PC Partpicker's wattage is not the correct wattage you should be looking at when purchasing a PSU.
For the R9 280 the minimum is 550W and that is if you have a Tier 2 PSU or above.

If you will not purchase a Tier 2 PSU or are thinking of overclocking the CPU or GPU you should get a 600W PSU atleast & a tier 2 600W if overclocking.

Hi, Thank you for such a quick reply.

I do have a Tier 2 I believe, and I will not be overclocking (will be using an i5-4460 which can't be)

Would you say the 520M Tier 2 will be fine with no overclocking and no immense fps/graphic games?

When i mean by overclocking i also mean the GPU too.

When you say 520M you mean the Seasonic 520 M12II Correct?

That PSU is great and one of the PSU's i would highly recommend, however the minimum should be 550W.

That would be your perfect PSU.

^Is the Power supply I have, which is now probably not the right choice.

I was wondering if I could still use it if I'm not doing any overclocking whatsoever?

Most definitely not because it is under the minimum PSU requirement and it isn't tier 2 or above.
