Hello folks,

I bought a set of new components to build a PC. I built it and fired her up, only to find that there was no signal coming from the graphics card. There is no fan activity on the Radeon too. I put the Radeon into an older machine, with no success, and also tried my old GPU in the new setup (Zotac GeForce GTX 260) which did give me fan action, but no signal.

I have so far checked all connections (8 + 6 pins), and flashed the latest BIOS. I've searched online to no real success.

One thing I did notice, was that 3 of the new GPU's heatsink 'fins' were damaged and bent. Not sure what this might mean, if anything, but makes me think that it may have been dropped at some point, or is a re-furb?

This is the hardware I'm using:

CPU AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core £116.99
CPU Cooler Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing
Motherboard Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0 ATX AM3+
Memory Corsair Vengeance LP 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600
Storage Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" SSD
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM
Video Card Gigabyte Radeon R9 280X 3GB WINDFORCE
Case Corsair Graphite Series 230T Orange
Power Supply EVGA 650W ATX12V / EPS12V
Monitor Dell U2414H 23.8"

PCPart Picker estimated wattage at 503W, I have a 650W PSU. Might that be an issue?

Such a bummer after all the work!

Any input would be a huge help.

Regards,
matt

Eureka! :)

Get in touch with Dell and ask about a replacement monitor. It's good that your GPU is working though...
Hi Both, just an update, the CPU LED on the motherboard is staying lit red constantly as of last boot. I'm going to have a look at this in more detail and then get back to you.

I just stripped everything and setup outside of the case. The Dell isn't recognising still, but the GPU is on, spinning and I have BIOS. I think it may have been a short on the Mobo? But we have BIOS! And working GPU!

I have just read there might be problems with that Dell monitor and mini display port.

I think we might have done it!

Solution
I'm currently trying to bootload properly, I think it's a minor problem, I need to make a USB stick to boot off (I have a DVD of windows 8.1) The CPU light has gone, yes. Blimey, I just pressed the DirectKey on the mobo to restart, and the Dell is working now...

I need to enable the boot device apparently, but I think that's standard fair for building PC's right?

Just wanted to say a massive thank you for helping me out, was able to eliminate and troubleshoot with the advice you gave. Thank you! didn't know a short on the mobo could have such an effect on everything like that.

Can I +1 you or something like that?

It's not a problem man, it's what we're here for. It doesn't matter who gives you the info as long as you get the right info. I'm glad that you've manage to get your PC up and running, if you have any issues don't hesitate to post another thread or contact me directly.

Enjoy your new pain in the ass 😉
