The documentation suggests that for two sticks of ram I want the 2nd and 4th slots from the cpu instead of the usual 1st and 3rd, is this correct?

You can run them either way for dual channel.

1 and 3 or 2 and 4.

It doesn't matter too much in terms of performance (you can actually test).
A good reason for using 2 and 4 is that they are farther from the CPU cooler.
